How can I manage sleep disorders?

Depending on the type and severity of your sleep disorder, it can be managed with non-prescription or prescription sleeping pills, sleep medications, or therapy.

Narcolepsy Treatment

Narcolepsy cannot be cured, but control of symptoms can be attained through lifestyle changes and narcolepsy medication. Lifestyle changes include regularly scheduled short naps and exercise. Because some narcoleptics have a nocturnal biological clock, night time jobs or occupations are recommended. Narcolepsy treatment with medication usually involves the use of stimulants such as amphetamines, NRIs (norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), and tricyclic antidepressants. Read more in the Types of Medication section.

Insomnia Treatment

Sometimes insomnia is the result of stress experienced from a life event and will pass after a few weeks or months. Other types of insomnia are chronic or long-term. As causes of insomnia can vary and may be mental or physical, it is important to visit a medical or mental health professional to identify the cause of your insomnia before deciding on the best treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy and lifestyle changes can be effective insomnia treatments and are sometimes recommended over sleeping medications as people can build a tolerance to or a dependence on sleeping pills over time. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia aims to eliminate any negative associations with sleep and create an environment that is conducive to sleep. It involves only getting in bed to sleep, getting up at the same time every morning, and getting out of bed and moving on to another activity if sleep does not occur. Alcohol, nicotine and caffeine intake is also regulated. Another type of therapy is called sleep restriction. It is controversial since it initially restricts sleep, but it has also been proven to be effective. Relaxation therapy and meditation have also been shown to be effective insomnia treatments. Sleeping medication is commonly prescribed to treat insomnia, but they are not a cure. Read more about sleeping medication in the Types of Medication section.

What are the different types of sleep help medications?

Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are often prescribed as a treatment for insomnia because of their sedative and hypnotic effects. It works by increasing the efficiency of the brain chemical GABA which decreases the excitability of neurons, producing a calming effect. Benzodiazepines are only recommended for short-term use as these drugs are commonly abused and lead to dependency.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines block histamines in the body and are usually used to treat allergic reactions. Antihistamines are sometimes prescribed as sleep medication for insomnia because they slow down activity in the central nervous system, causing drowsiness and sedation. A commonly prescribed antihistamine drug for insomnia is called Unisom.

GABA Agonists

GABA agonists are prescribed to treat insomnia due to their short-acting hypnotic effects. These drugs are distinct from benzodiazepines, but they also increase the efficiency of the neurotransmitter GABA. GABA agonist drugs usually begin to work within 15 minutes and begin to lose effect after two or three hours. GABA agonists are not effective in maintaining sleep, only it initiating it. These sleeping pills are only recommended for short-term use (2-6 weeks) due to tolerance, dependence and withdrawal symptoms.

Tricyclic Antidepressants

Tricyclic antidepressants may be recommended as a treatment for narcolepsy or insomnia. Tricyclic antidepressants act as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). These antidepressants can help manage REM symptoms and cataplexy in narcoleptics and have a sedating effect for insomniacs. They are not as commonly prescribed as other medications due to side effects.

What are the symptoms of sleep disorders?

Symptoms of insomnia include falling or staying asleep. Six to eight hours of sleep per night is recommended for good health. Symptoms of narcolepsy include falling asleep during the day or having irresistible urges to nap, sudden muscle weakness or limpness (cataplexy), sleep paralysis, and/or automatic behavior. Automatic behavior occurs when a person continues to talk or do some activity after he/she has fallen asleep and then has no memory of it upon waking.
