Atelvia Information:

What is Atelvia?

Atelvia is a bisphosphonate drug that is used to slow bone loss in post-menopausal patients with osteoporosis. Bone tissue goes through a constant turnover process where old cells are absorbed by osteoclasts and new cells are generated by osteoblasts. Bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclasts, slowing the breakdown of bone tissue while allowing osteoblasts to continue to create new tissue.

How do I take Atelvia?

Atelvia tablets are only taken once a week, which is a total of just four doses per month. Atelvia should be taken immediately after breakfast with at least four ounces of water in order to get the medication to the stomach as quickly as possible. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking your medication. Never cut, rush or chew these tablets. Atelvia can cause damage to the esophagus if not taken correctly. If you are taking any vitamins or supplements, take them at least 30 minutes before taking Atelvia.

Before taking Atelvia, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication and if you have any allergies.

This medication may cause osteonecrosis of the jaw. Be sure your dentist knows you are taking this medication and be sure to properly clean your teeth.

What if I forget to take a dose of Atelvia?

Atelvia should only be taken in the mornings after breakfast, so if you miss your weekly dose, wait until the next morning to take your pill after breakfast and then continue on your regular routine. Do not ever take extra medication to try to make up for a missed dose.
