Understanding Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes & Medical Savings

Diabetes
There are multiple forms of Diabetes, but the most prevalent and familiar exist as Type 1 and Type 2. Type 2 Diabetes is in many ways preventable, while Type 1 typically occurs before age 20 – formerly known as “juvenile onset.”

Type 1 Diabetes, less common, consists of about 10-15% of the Diabetic population. In Type 1’s, the pancreas secretes insulin, but it is destroyed by autoantibodies. This is why you are likely to see a Type 1 Diabetic carrying a kit and medical device at most times. Those who are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes must inject insulin or use an insulin pump.

Type 2 or “adult onset” Diabetics are typically diagnosed after age 35. Type 2 Diabetics are frequently heavyset or obese – and develop a medical condition called “insulin resistance.” These patients often produce sufficient insulin, but the insulin is incapable of performing the necessary functions. About 85-95% of Diabetics are Type 2 – a figure that has increased in conjunction with the country’s obesity epidemic.

While Type 1 Diabetes is not “cured” but rather treated, Type 2 Diabetes can often be corrected with a large lifestyle change: diet and exercise.

A third type of Diabetes, less common, is known as “Gestational Diabetes.” This form of diabetes may occur during pregnancy, caused by high levels of glucose in the mother. Gestational Diabetes may affect the offspring if not properly controlled, and might require a cesarean section during birth. Attention to blood sugar levels during pregnancy often will prevent the onset of Gestational Diabetes.

Type 2 and Gestational Diabetics are in similar in that both are controlled or prevented by a healthy lifestyle: weight control, diet and physical activity.
