Endocet is a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone. It is a powerful pain reliever that doctors prescribe to relieve moderate to severe pain. Typically, Endocet is used to treat short-term pain. Other medications are prescribed for more long-term symptoms of pain or chronic pain.
Oxycodone belongs to a group of drugs called opioid or narcotic pain relievers. It increases your body's tolerance to pain so that you feel less discomfort.
Acetaminophen, a less potent pain reliever that is best known under the brand name Tylenol, increases oxycodone's effects. When combined, they give you more relief from pain. Acetaminophen also reduces fever.
Your doctor will adjust your dosage to fit your needs. Narcotic drugs like Endocet carry some risks, so it is important to follow your doctor's instructions. Endocet may be habit-forming. Do not take more than directed without talking with your doctor. If you take it for more than a few weeks, your doctor may decrease your dosage gradually rather than all at once.
Taking too much acetaminophen can damage your liver and cause other health problems. Be careful not to take other medicines like Tylenol that contain acetaminophen while taking Endocet.
Endocet can cause constipation. Drinking six to eight full glasses of water a day may help prevent this.
Endocet may cause side effects. Less serious side effects include:
- Dizziness or drowsiness
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Mild nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, constipation
- Contact your doctor if you have any of these more serious side effects:
- Fainting or light-headedness
- Shallow breathing or a slow heartbeat
- Seizure
- Confusion, ununsual thoughts or behavior
- Urination problems
- Nausea, upper stomach pain, loss of appetite
- Itching
- Dark urine, clay-colored stools
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
Mixing Endocet with other narcotic pain relievers, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, muscle relaxers or similar medicines can be dangerous. It increases the effect of these medicines. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about other medications you are taking.
