Zika has been spreading in many different ways, including through sexual transmission. Although the sexual transmission of Zika is not the most common way the disease spreads, it is especially relevant given the danger of Zika to pregnant women and their unborn children. Whether or not you’re pregnant, intending to be, or just a cautious citizen, here are some tips to prevent the sexual transmission of Zika.
Condoms
Maybe this seems obvious, but condoms are one of the most effective tools to prevent spreading Zika through sexual transmission. Male and female condoms are useful for preventing sexually transmitted diseases, especially when used throughout the entire time of sex from start to finish. Dental dams (polyurethane or latex sheets) can also be useful for oral sex.

Testing
Testing is important for all pregnant women who have been exposed to the potential sexual transmission of Zika (i.e. had sex without a condom with someone who lives in or has traveled to an area with Zika). Doctors should test any patients for Zika if they develop symptoms that look like Zika, and patients should report exposure to a partner, whether or not they’ve been sick. Be cautious, and test to be safe.
Safe Travel for Pregnant Women
The CDC has advised that pregnant women and women intending to become pregnant do not visit Miami Beach and Miami, specifically the Wynwood area. This area has been infested with more Zika mosquitos than other areas within the U.S.
Outright Abstinence
Sometimes not having any sex is the solution. If a sex partner of yours has been infected with Zika, condoms may prevent the possibility of sexually transmitted Zika infection, but not having any sex ensures it. Especially for pregnant women, abstinence is the safest method of protection for them and their unborn children.
Scientists are learning new things about the Zika virus every day, including new forms of prevention, and hopefully a cure. But for now, it is important to make sure you protect yourself and loved ones from sexually transmitted Zika as well as any other form of transmission.
