What is Brisdelle?
Brisdelle is the brand name of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) paroxetine, an anti-depressant drug that increases serotonin activity in the brain, and is used to treat the vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) associated with menopause. It is administered in capsule form and is available only by prescription.
How do I take Brisdelle?
The Brisdelle drug is administered in capsule form, taken orally once a day, with water, and with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush, chew, suck, break, or inhale the medication.
Before taking Brisdelle, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to paroxetine or any of the ingredients in Brisdelle
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking diuretics, NSAIDs, antihistamines, anticoagulants, or antidepressants
- You are taking MAOIs, SSRIs, or medications for irregular heartbeat, mental illness, nausea, migraine headaches, or seizures
- You are taking celecoxib, buspirone, procyclidine, bromocriptine, bupropion, ondansetron, diazepam, dextromethorphan, atazanavir, dexamethasone, atomoxetine, metoprolol, or metoclopramide
- You are taking chlorpromazine, cimetidine, clopidogrel, propranolol, lithium, codeine, propoxyphene, isoniazid, digoxin, risperidone, ranitidine, rifampin, haloperidol, fosamprenavir, or fentanyl
- You are taking venlafaxine, trazodone, tramadol, timolol, ticlopidine, theophylline, terbinafine, tamoxifen, sibutramine, ritonavir, dipyridamole, or dicloxacillin
- You have had a heart attack, seizures, or bleeding in the stomach or esophagus; or
- You have, or have had, kidney, liver, or heart disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Brisdelle?
Some patients have reported side effects after taking the Brisdelle drug. Less severe side effects include changes in sex drive or ability, confusion, gas, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, changes in appetite, concentration problems, dizziness, dry mouth, flushing, sweating, forgetfulness, headache, heartburn, muscle weakness or tightness, agitation, bodily pain, painful or irregular menstruation, light sensitivity, drowsiness, sore teeth and gums, unusual dreams, and yawning. More severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include abnormal bleeding or bruising, black and tarry stools, bloody vomit, chest or bone pain, problems urinating, breathing difficulties, fainting, allergic reaction, tachycardia, arrhythmia, red blood in stools, visual and aural hallucinations, seizures, sudden nausea or vomiting, or swelling, itching, burning, or infection in the vagina.
What if I forget to take a dose of Brisdelle?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Brisdelle, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next dose in the schedule, skip the one missed, and resume the normal dosing routine. Do not take multiple doses of this medication to make up for the one missed.
How do I store Brisdelle?
Keep Brisdelle tightly sealed in its original container, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity and out of the reach of children. Dispose of any expired or unused doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Brisdelle?
If an overdose of Brisdelle is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, call Emergency Services at 911. Some of the signs of an overdose of Brisdelle include behavioral changes, vision problems, bodily tremors, disorientation, diarrhea, nausea, changes in urine color, balance issues or problems walking, dizziness, drowsiness, extreme fatigue, tachycardia, arrhythmia, agitation, malaise, muscle spasms, stiffness or pain, changes to appetite, seizures, and vomiting.
Warnings
Thoughts of suicide have been known to occur in people using this medication. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Brisdelle may cause depression and Serotonin Syndrome. Report mood changes to your doctor. This medication may interfere with the effectiveness of tamoxifen, may contribute to abnormal bleeding, and may increase the risk of bone fractures. Brisdelle may contribute to manic episodes, seizures, and vision problems. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Do not drive, operate heavy equipment or machinery, or use power tools until you understand the effects of Brisdelle.
Brand Names
Brisdelle is the brand name of the drug paroxetine, which may also be available under other names including Paxil, Paxil CR, and Pexeva. However, the concentration of paroxetine in these medications is different from that in Brisdelle; the medications are not interchangeable, and you should not substitute one for another without the approval of a doctor.
