Budesonide Information:
What is budesonide?
Budesonide is a corticosteroid medication used to treat inflammation caused by a variety conditions including Crohn’s disease, colitis, and asthma. The oral form of budesonide is most commonly used to treat Chron’s disease and inflammatory bowel syndrome. It works by being slowly released into the intestines to stop inflammation.
How do I take budesonide?
Budesonide comes as a capsule to take orally. It is usually taken once per day in the mornings for 8-12 weeks or until the condition is under control. Then your doctor may slowly decrease your dose. The size of the dosage depends on the individual’s condition. Always swallow budesonide capsules whole. Do not chew, split, or break these capsules as it may destroy the time-release mechanism and the medication will not work properly. Tell your doctor if you are unable to swallow pills. Do not take these pills with grapefruit juice and avoid Echinacea. These substances can interfere with the absorption of budesonide.
Before taking budesonide, tell your doctor if:

- You have a family history of diabetes, glaucoma, or cataracts.
- You have a history of tuberculosis or stomach ulcers.
- You have osteoporosis.
- You have or have recently had an infection.

What if I forget to take a dose of budesonide?
If you forget to take a dose of budesonide, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of budesonide to compensate for a missed one.
