What is cabergoline?
Cabergoline is a generic drug derived from ergot that affects dopamine activity. The release of prolactin from the pituitary gland is regulated by dopamine. By increasing dopamine activity, cabergoline can help regulate high levels of prolactin. Cabergoline has a variety of uses. It is sometimes prescribed to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, Cushing’s disease, uterine fibroids and other pituitary adenomas.
How do I take cabergoline?
Cabergoline medicine comes in the form of a tablet and is normally taken twice weekly. It may be taken with or without food. Your dosing instructions will depend on the condition your doctor is treating. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.
Before taking cabergoline, tell your doctor if:
- You have ever had liver or heart disease.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in cabergoline or if you are allergic to any other medications.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially ergotamine or other ergot-derived medications, levodopa or medications for Parkinson’s disease, haloperidol or medications for mental illness, antihistamines, medications for nausea and blood pressure medications.
- You have heart valve disease or symptoms of heart valve disease.
- You have high blood pressure.
- You have ever had a heart attack.
- You have gastrointestinal ulcers or signs of gastrointestinal bleeding
What are the possible side effects of taking cabergoline?
Possible cabergoline drug side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness and fatigue. If any of these side effects are severe, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about right away include shortness of breath, breast pain, unusually severe menstrual cramps, behavioral and/or mood changes, hallucinations, chest pain, back pain, changes in urination and vision changes.
What if I forget to take a dose of cabergoline?
If you miss a dose of cabergoline, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time to take your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store cabergoline?
Store cabergoline medicine at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on cabergoline?
Signs of cabergoline drug overdose include hallucinations, nasal congestion and loss of consciousness. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on cabergoline, call the Poison Control Center at 1-8000-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive or not breathing, call 911.
Warnings
Cabergoline can cause severe and destructive behavioral changes in some, such as the sudden urge to gamble or sexual urges. Tell your doctor immediately if unusual mood changes or behavioral changes emerge.
