Canasa Information:
What is Canasa?
Canasa is an aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory medication. It treats ulcerative proctitis, a disease characterized by rectal pain, bleeding, diarrhea, mucus discharge, and frequent or urgent bowel movements. The Canasa drug does not cure this disease, but it can help decrease the amount of mucus and blood in stools, as well as the frequency of bowel movements. In some cases, this medication is also prescribed to treat Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition.
How do I take Canasa?
The Canasa drug comes as a rectal suppository and is typically inserted once a day, before bedtime but after a bowel movement. It is easiest to insert the suppository while lying on your left side with your right knee bent, and it is best to remain lying for several minutes after inserting the suppository. The suppository should stay in place for 1 to 3 hours in order for the medicine to be effective. If you have additional questions about how to use this medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Before taking Canasa, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications, especially mesalamine or salicylates (including aspirin)
- You have any other allergies
- You have a history of kidney or pancreatic problems
- You have ever had pericarditis (inflammation around the heart)
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Canasa?
While many patients take the Canasa drug without experiencing any major side effects, some people have reported headaches, stomach pain, rectal pain, and gas. These side effects are not necessarily cause for concern, but you should tell your doctor if any of these symptoms persist or worsen. Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody diarrhea, severe headache, fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain, change in your usual amount of urine, or severe abdominal pain.
What if I forget to take a dose of Canasa?
If you miss a dose of Canasa, insert the suppository as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule.
How do I store Canasa?
Canasa can be refrigerated or stored at room temperature (between 36 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Do not store it in the bathroom, as heat, light, and moisture may cause it to break down. Always keep your prescription medications out of reach of pets and children. Talk to your pharmacist about how to dispose of this medication if it expires or you no longer need it.
What happens if I overdose on Canasa?
Because it is only available as a suppository, overdosing on Canasa is relatively rare. However, this drug can be harmful when ingested, so call your local poison control center (1-800-222-1222) immediately if you or anyone in your household swallows Canasa.
Warnings
Your doctor should assess renal function before you start treatment and periodically during treatment with Canasa, as this drug may cause renal impairment in rare cases. If you have a history of renal disease, inform your doctor so that he or she can assess the risks. It is not known if the Canasa drug is safe for use for longer than 6 weeks, so it should not be used long-term.
