Heartburn & Digestion Information & Discounts

Save on Heartburn & Digestion medications with the free discounts below.

Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, is a painful condition that can prevent you from enjoying the foods you like and living your daily life.  When it becomes a chronic condition, it is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.  In either case, the sensation is painful and can be indicative of an underlying problem.  Medications and treatment for GERD and heartburn relief are often needed over long periods.  Click our link below to start saving instantly on your GERD medications through print, mobile, or email coupons or continue reading about GERD, heartburn medications and GERD medications below.

Heartburn & Digestion Information & Discounts

What are some common digestion conditions?

Most digestion conditions are caused by the persistent backsplash of acid, the presence of bacteria, and genetic factors that can cause severe irritation of the GI tract.  When this irritation occurs in the esophagus, chronic feelings of heartburn can result, as well as breathing difficulty and heart problems.  When the irritation occurs in the bowel, diarrhea, constipation, and blood in the bowel movements can result.  In both cases this irritation causes long term difficulties and requires professional treatment.

Heartburn is a common condition that occurs when the acid from the stomach splashes up into the esophagus.  Because the lining of the esophagus is not meant to deal with that level of acidity, the result can be quite painful.  When this sensation becomes chronic or especially severe, a doctor may diagnose the disorder as GERD and prescribe stronger treatment.

A disease that could have similar symptoms is Crohn’s disease.  This disease is a problem of the lower GI tract that can affect any part of the digestive tract.  Sufferers can also experience diarrhea, rectal bleeding, or unusual sensations of the bowels as well as symptoms of heartburn.

How can I manage digestive disorders?

Heartburn and GERD

Heartburn can generally be managed with over the counter heartburn medicine, though your doctor may recommend prescription medications for extreme cases.  When the heartburn has progressed to GERD, stronger GERD treatments may be recommended.  In extreme cases, surgery may be required to prevent the continued influx of acid.

Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease treatment generally involves anti-inflammatory medication.  As inflammation of the GI tract is reduced, the symptoms should abate, and the healing process can begin.  However, two-thirds of all cases of Crohn’s disease are not healed entirely simply with medication.  Surgery will likely be required after Crohn’s disease treatment stops affecting the symptoms.  The surgery will likely not cure the disease, but it can be successful in restoring the sufferer’s quality of life.

What are the different types of digestive and heartburn medications?

Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitor medications are effective heartburn and GERD treatments that work by blocking the enzyme system that leads to the production of stomach acid. They are some of the most effective drugs for inhibiting gastric acid production available today, eliminating up to 99% of gastric acid secretion. Proton pump inhibitors are used for short-term and long-term treatment of GERD.

Histamine-2 Antagonists

H2 agonists such as Zantac and Pepcid work as a treatment of GERD and heartburn by blocking the regular secretion of acid as well as the food-stimulated production of acid in the stomach. H2 agonists are older and not as effective as proton pump inhibitors, but they are still more effective than regular antacids and last longer (between 6 and 10 hours).

What are the symptoms of digestive disorders?

Crohn’s disease, GERD, and heartburn all have similar symptoms.  Painful burning sensations, sometimes mistaken for heart problems, are the most common symptom of both heartburn and GERD.  Diarrhea, constipation, and blood in the stool are all symptoms of Crohn’s disease.
