Disulfiram Information:
Disulfiram is a drug used together with other therapies to help people with chronic alcoholism overcome their disease. It works by blocking an enzyme that metabolizes alcohol intake, creating extremely unpleasant side effects if alcohol is consumed. Disulfiram works best in conjunction with behavior modification therapy, psychotherapy, and counseling to help with alcoholism.
You should wear a medical alert tag or carry an ID card stating that you take disulfiram so that a medical provider will know in the event of an emergency. Your doctor may recommend that a family member or other caregiver administer this medication to you to ensure that it is being taken as part of your treatment plan. You will require frequent blood tests to check liver function.
Before taking disulfiram, tell your doctor if:

· You have a rubber allergy
· You take phenytoin (Dilantin), tuberculosis medication, or a blood thinner
· You have recently taken metronidazole or paraldehyde or consumed foods or products with alcohol
· You are allergic to any medications
Common side effects of disulfiram may include skin rash, acne, mild headache, tiredness, impotence, loss of interest in sex, or a metallic or garlic-like taste in your mouth. Call your doctor at once if you have eye pain or sudden vision loss, confusion, unusual thoughts or behaviors, or liver problems. There may be additional side effects with this medication; discuss these with your doctor.
You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Take the remaining doses for the day at evenly spaced intervals unless your doctor tells you to do otherwise.
Store this medication at room temperature away from sources of moisture, heat, or light.
If you think you’ve overdosed on disulfiram, seek emergency medical attention immediately or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
