Doxepin HCL Information:
What is doxepin HCl?
Doxepin hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant used in the treatment of anxiety, depression and, at times, insomnia. It works by increasing certain naturally occurring chemicals found in the brain that help maintain proper mental balance. It is available in tablet, capsule, or liquid form and only with a doctor’s prescription.
How do I take doxepin HCl?
Doxepin HCl is an oral medication usually taken one to three times a day; however, your physician may adjust the amount and frequency of dosage. Take this medication at or around the same time every day; it can be taken with or without food. If you are taking the tablet or capsule, take it with water.
When taking the liquid form, use the metered dropper provided, and place the prescribed amount in milk or skim milk, water, or juice (grapefruit, tomato, orange, pineapple, or orange); do not mix it in grape juice, soft drinks, or any carbonated beverages. Prepare this medication only when it is time to take it.
If this medication has been prescribed to treat insomnia, take it thirty minutes before you are ready to go to sleep, and take it only if you are able to get a full seven to eight hours sleep.
Before taking doxepin HCl, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to doxepin HCl or other medications;
- You are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (Eldepryl, Marplan, Nardil, Parnate, or any others);
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements;
- You are taking anticoagulants;
- You are taking medication for diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, seizures, high blood pressure, colds, asthma, or allergies;
- You are taking muscle relaxers, sedatives, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or thyroid medication;
- You have glaucoma;
- You have urinary problems;
- You have an enlarged prostate;
- You have liver, kidney, or heart disease;

- You have seizures, or a history of seizures;
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing.
What are the possible side effects of taking doxepin HCl?
There are several side effects known to appear in patients taking doxepin hydrochloride. Less severe side effects include nausea, blurred vision, appetite or weight changes, diminished sex drive, constipation, urinary problems, drowsiness, feelings of tiredness or weakness, sensitivity to sunlight, dry mouth, unusual sweating, and/or nightmares. If any of these persist or become more severe, contact your physician.
Severe side effects include problems with breathing or swallowing, fever, arrhythmia, or uncontrollable shaking; spasms of the neck, jaw, or back; shuffling gait or slow or slurred speech; yellowing of the sclera or skin (symptoms of jaundice); or increased anxiety, depression, hostility, hyperactivity, trouble sleeping, or panic attacks. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your physician immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of doxepin HCl?
If you forget to take your regularly scheduled dose of doxepin hydrochloride (hcl), take it as soon as you remember; however, if the time is near for your next regularly scheduled dose, skip the one you missed, and resume the normal dosing routine. Do not take multiple doses of this medication.
