Etodolac Information:

What is etodolac?

Etodolac is a generic NSAID or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat mild to moderate pain and inflammation. Unlike ibuprofen and other similar drugs, it is specifically prescribed to treat pain resulting from arthritis and osteoporosis. As with other NSAIDs, etodolac works by inhibiting the body’s production of the COX enzyme, which is an enzyme that allows the body to produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are responsible for regulating inflammation, sensitizing the spinal neurons to pain, and inhibiting stomach acid secretion, among others. This is why NSAIDs reduce pain and inflammation and can also cause stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding with frequent use.

How do I take etodolac?

Etodolac comes as a tablet, capsule, or extended release capsule that may be purchased at your local pharmacy with a doctor’s prescription. Your doctor may slowly increase your dosage over time. Dosing depends on the severity of your condition. This medication may be used regularly or occasionally to treat pain. Take this medication orally with a full glass of water. Consumption of food or milk is recommended to avoid an upset stomach.

Before taking etodolac, tell your doctor if:

  • You have heart disease, circulation problems or retention of fluids.
  • You have a history of kidney or liver disease.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • You have recently had heart surgery.
  • You have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in etodolac, aspirin, or any other NSAIDs.
  • You have high blood pressure.
  • You have stomach ulcers or you’ve experienced gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • You have asthma.
  • You consume more than three alcoholic beverages a day.
  • You smoke cigarettes.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially aspirin and other NSAIDs, diuretics, blood pressure medications that are ACE inhibitors, blood thinners, methotrexate, cyclosporine, digoxin, steroids, furosemide, and lithium.

What are the possible side effects of taking etodolac?

Possible side effects from taking etodolac include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, indigestion, vomiting, headache, runny nose, and ringing in the ears. Less common but serious side effects include swelling or weight gain, coughing up blood, vomit that resembles ground coffee, chest pain, flu-like symptoms, stomach pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, and dark, tarry stools. Report any serious or persistent side effects to your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of etodolac?

If you are taking etodolac on a regular schedule and miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s near the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of etodolac to make up for a missed one.

How do I store etodolac?

Store etodolac tightly closed in its container at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect it from heat and moisture and keep your medication away from children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on etodolac?

Signs of overdose on etodolac include weakness or lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the upper abdomen. Depending on the excessiveness of the dose, there may or may not be signs of high blood pressure, respiratory depression, kidney failure, and lastly, coma. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on etodolac, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious, call 911.

Warnings

Etodolac can increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Tell your doctor if you have heart or circulation problems. Etodolac also raises your risk of developing stomach ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems. Limit your alcohol intake while using this medication.
