Gelnique Information:
What is Gelnique?
Gelnique contains a drug called oxybutynin that reduces the urge to urinate by relaxing smooth muscle tissue in the bladder. When applied topically, this medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. Bladder spasms are reduced, and so is the urge to urinate.
How do I apply Gelnique?
Gelnique is made in the form of a gel. It should be applied topically to the thigh, upper arm, abdomen or shoulder once daily at the same time every day, or as per your doctor’s instructions. The application site for this medication should be rotated. For example, if you apply Gelnique to your abdomen on the first day, apply it to your thigh the second day and so on. Wash and dry the area before you apply your medication. Apply the entire packet immediately after opening and rub in the medication until it is absorbed. Avoid getting the area wet until at least one hour has passed after applying Gelnique.
Before using Gelnique, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Gelnique.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have glaucoma.
- Your volume of urine has decreased or you have difficulty urinating.
- You have a bladder or intestinal obstruction.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have gastrointestinal or digestive disorders such as ulcerative colitis, GERD or others.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially medications for digestive disorders, bone disease, other bladder medications, antiemetics, atropine, benztropine and bronchodilators.
What are the possible side effects of using Gelnique?
Possible side effects from apply Gelnique include dry mouth, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, mild skin irritation where the medication was applied, and blurred vision. Tell your doctor right away if any of these side effects are serious or persistent. Less common side effects that should be reported immediately include fever with hot skin, pain or burning during urination, and uneven heart rate.
What if I forget to apply a dose of Gelnique?
If you forget to apply your dose of Gelnique, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not apply two doses of Gelnique to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Gelnique?
Store Gelnique at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect the packets from moisture and humidity. Discard gel packets after using. Do not let them sit open and use them again later. Be sure that discarded packets are out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Gelnique?
Signs of Gelnique drug overdose include feelings of excitement or restlessness, hot and dry skin, vomiting, fever, uneven heart rate, thirst and urinating very little, if at all. If you or someone you know has accidentally overdosed on Gelnique, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive or not breathing, call 911.
