Gonal-F Information:
What is Gonal-F?
Gonal-F contains human follicle-stimulating hormone, which helps stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs. It is most commonly prescribed to women who are having difficulty becoming pregnant, but it is also sometimes prescribed to men to increase sperm count. It is administered through an injection under the skin.
How do I use Gonal-F?
Your Gonal-F should come with an instruction leaflet that explains how to prepare and use the medication. If you have additional questions after reading the instructions, talk to your pharmacist or doctor. Always wash your hands and clean your injection site before using this fertility drug. Change the injection site daily to avoid skin irritation and discomfort. You should inject Gonal-F under the skin or into a muscle.
Before using Gonal-F, tell your doctor if:
• You are allergic to this or any other medications
• You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
• You have primary ovarian failure
• You have any unusual or heavy vaginal bleeding
• You have had a brain tumor
• You have had cancer of any reproductive organs
• You have thyroid or adrenal gland problems
• You have ovarian cysts or polycystic ovarian syndrome
• You have had blood clots or have any risk factors for blood clots
• You have had a stroke, heart attack, or angina
• You have any lung problems, such as asthma
What are the possible side effects of using Gonal-F?
Gonal-F may cause nausea, vomiting, headache, stomach pain, bloating, or skin irritation at the injection site. Side effects often go away as your body adjusts to the medication, but if you have any bothersome or long-lasting side effects, inform your doctor. You should tell your doctor right away if you have any rare but serious side effects, including unusual vaginal bleeding, numbness or swelling of your extremities, or pain or swelling of the calf muscles. Get emergency medical help in the unlikely event that you experience vision changes, a sudden severe headache, difficulty breathing, chest pain, slurred speech, or weakness on one side of the body.
What if I forget to take a dose of Gonal-F?
It is very important that you take Gonal-F on the dosage schedule that your doctor has prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your doctor right away to find out what to do. You may need to establish a new dosage schedule.
How do I store Gonal-F?
Gonal-F can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Keep it out of reach of any children or pets in your home, and do not expose it to bright light or moisture. Inject the medication immediately after you have mixed it, and discard any unused liquid when you’re done. If you are not sure how to safely dispose of unused medication, talk to your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Gonal-F?
Overdosing on Gonal-F may cause nausea, vomiting, severe stomach pain, severe headache, bloating, weakness, or sudden weight gain. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) right away.
Warnings
When starting your Gonal-F treatment, avoid driving and operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Do not drink alcoholic beverages during your treatment. Like many fertility medications, Gonal-F increases the likelihood of multiple births (such as twins or triplets). Stop using Gonal-F once you become pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor.
