HCG Information:

What is HCG?

HCG is the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin and is used to treat different conditions in females and males. It is prescribed for women to stimulate ovulation and treat infertility; for men, it is used to stimulate testosterone and increase sperm count. The HCG medicine may also be prescribed to adolescent males whose testes have not descended into the scrotum (cryptorchidism).

How do I take HCG?

The HCG drug is administered through intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. For those who will be self-administering HCG, talk with your doctor about the injection protocol and the dosing frequency; follow the prescription instructions precisely. Speak with your doctor if you have any questions about how to use this medication.

Before taking HCG, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to human chorionic gonadotropin or any of the ingredients in the HCG medicine
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking a follicle stimulating hormone
  • You have hormone-related cancer
  • You are experiencing precocious (early onset) puberty
  • You have, or have had, asthma, epilepsy, heart or kidney disease, migraines, thyroid disorder, an ovarian cyst, adrenal gland disorder, or uterine bleeding
  • You have, or have had, breast, ovarian, or uterine cancer or tumors
  • You have, or have had, pituitary, hypothalamus or prostate cancer

What are the possible side effects of taking HCG?

Some patients have reported side effects after using HCG. Mild side effects include pain or irritation at the injection site, headache, fatigue, or changes in mood or emotion. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing); symptoms in women include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), rapid weight gain, indigestion, nausea, swelling, bloating, vomiting, stomach or pelvic region pain, change in urine flow, or shortness of breath; symptoms in young males include gynecomastia, height increase, development of secondary sex characteristics, or acne.

What if I forget to take a dose of HCG?

If you miss your scheduled dose of the HCG drug, contact your physician for instructions.

How do I store HCG?

If you will be administering HCG at home, keep the medication tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused amounts according to the instructions of a pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on HCG?

If an overdose of HCG is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Do not use HCG if you are pregnant; contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking this medication. This drug may cause multiple pregnancies to develop. HCG may cause early onset puberty in males.
