Liothyronine Sodium Information:
What is liothyronine sodium?
Liothyronine sodium is a thyroid hormone drug that is prescribed to treat hypothyroidism (a condition in which the thyroid gland fails to produce enough thyroid hormone) and its symptoms, goiter (enlarged thyroid), as well as to test for hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone). It may also be used to treat other conditions, including thyroid cancer.
Hypothyroidism prevents normal bodily functions and can result in hair loss, listlessness, weight gain, increased sensitivity to cold, slow speech, and other problems. Liothyronine sodium is used to help stop or reverse these.
How do I take liothyronine sodium?
Liothyronine sodium is an oral medication in tablet form and is best when taken at the same time every day with plenty of water. Take it on an empty stomach, either 30 minutes before eating or two hours after. The amount prescribed depends on your condition, what it is being treated, and your age. These factors will also affect dosage frequency.
Once liothyronine sodium has been prescribed, it may be necessary to take it for rest of your life. Therefore, do not discontinue its use or change the dosage amount or frequency without a doctor’s permission and supervision, even if you are feeling well.
Before taking liothyronine sodium, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to liothyronine, thyroid hormone, or any other drug or medications;
- You have any allergies;
- You have hyperthyroidism;
- You are taking other medications, including what they are, and their dosage;
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing;
- You have, or have had, diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease;
- You have myxedema or other thyroid or adrenal gland problems;
- You have an underactive pituitary gland, ovaries, or testes (hypogonadism);
- You have a blood clotting disorder; or
- You anticipate having surgery while on this medication.
What are the possible side effects of taking liothyronine sodium?
There may be different side effects that result from taking liothyronine sodium. Tell your doctor if you have any of the following and they are severe or will not go away: weight loss, tremors, headaches, or stomach or intestinal problems such as vomiting, nausea, cramping, or diarrhea. Other side effects include irritability, nervousness, insomnia, increased appetite, changes to the menstrual cycle, fever, sensitivity to heat, or excessive sweating. Temporary hair loss may also be a problem, especially in children during the early stages of taking the medication.
In the event of heart attack, chest pain or rapid or irregular heartbeat, contact your physician immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of liothyronine sodium?
If you forget to take your prescribed dose of liothyronine sodium at the regularly scheduled time, take it as soon as you remember. However, if the time for the next scheduled dose is near, skip the missed dose and simply resume the dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
How do I store liothyronine sodium?
You should store liothyronine sodium in its original container with the lid tightly secured, and out of the reach of children. Keep it at room temperature, away from extremes of heat, cold, and humidity. Dispose of outdated or expired quantities according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on liothyronine sodium?
If the patient has taken an overdose of liothyronine sodium, call the local Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing, collapsed, or showing other severe reactions, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Liothyronine sodium can interact adversely with other drugs or medications, so check with your physician beforehand. It cannot be used to treat obesity in those with a normally functioning thyroid, and may be life threatening if taken with diet medications that contain amphetamines. Do not share this medication with others or change the dosage. This medication can affect blood levels; therefore, those with diabetes must carefully monitor their condition while taking liothyronine sodium.
