Marinol Information:

What is Marinol?

Marinol is the drug dronabinol, a synthetic cannabinoid prescribed to treat the vomiting and nausea from chemotherapy in patients who have had poor results from other medications. It is also prescribed to stimulate appetite and treat weight loss in people with AIDs. It works by affecting the part of the brain that controls appetite, vomiting, and nausea.

How do I take Marinol?

Marinol is administered in capsule form and is taken orally with water, one to three hours before chemotherapy, and then every two to four hours after. No more than four to six doses of the Marinol medicine are taken per day. If this drug is prescribed to increase appetite, the dosing frequency and amount will be determined by a physician and depends on the medical profile of the patient. Swallow the capsules whole; do not crush, break, split, or chew them. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking it without a doctor’s permission.

Before taking Marinol, tell your doctor if:

Less severe symptoms include anxiety, confusion, dizziness, aural and visual hallucinations, elevated mood, memory loss, nausea, sleepiness, stomach pain, strange or unusual thoughts, sudden warm feeling, unsteady walking, vomiting, or weakness. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing), tachycardia, or seizures.

What if I forget to take a dose of Marinol?

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of your Marinol medicine, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number taken or change the dosing regimen to make up for one that was missed.
