This medicine is a potassium-sparing and thiazide diuretic combination used to treat high blood pressure and swelling due to excess body water. It may be also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY BE TAKEN WITH FOOD if it upsets your stomach. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE an increase in urine or in frequency of urination. To prevent this from affecting sleep, if you are taking 1 dose daily, take it in the morning after breakfast. If you are taking more than 1 dose, take the last one no later than 6 pm, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. IF YOU TAKE CHOLESTYRAMINE OR COLESTIPOL, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take it with this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
WARNING: This medicine can increase potassium levels in your body. This is more likely to occur in people with kidney problems, diabetes, in elderly patients, or if the patient is severely ill. Potassium levels must be closely monitored, especially in people with any of these problems or illnesses. If not treated, high potassium levels can be fatal. Lab tests will be required, so be sure to keep appointments. If you develop burning, numbness, or tingling; muscle weakness; tiredness; or an irregular heartbeat, notify your doctor right away. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking dofetilide, a salt substitute containing potassium, another medicine that contains triamterene, an aldosterone blocker (eg, eplerenone), or another potassium-sparing diuretic (eg, amiloride, spironolactone). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking potassium supplements, amphotericin B, corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), corticotrophin (ACTH), chlorpropamide, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen, indomethacin), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril), certain chemotherapy medicines, diazoxide, digoxin, lithium, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), methenamine, or medicine for high blood pressure. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including cirrhosis or liver problems; diabetes; gout; kidney problems; heart failure; lupus; dehydration; high blood acid levels; low folic acid levels; blood electrolyte problems; allergies; pregnancy; or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are on a low-salt (sodium) diet, or if you have a history of kidney stones or irregular heartbeat. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have severe kidney problems or high blood potassium levels, or if you are unable to urinate. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include dizziness or lightheadedness when standing or sitting up, nausea, diarrhea, or headache. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY RAISE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR. High blood sugar may make you feel confused, drowsy, or thirsty. It can also make you flush, breathe faster, or have a fruit-like breath odor. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor right away. THIS MEDICINE CONTAINS A SULFONAMIDE CALLED HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE, which can cause certain eye problems (myopia, angle-closure glaucoma). Your risk may be increased if you are allergic to sulfonamide medicines (eg, sulfamethoxazole) or to penicillin antibiotics (eg, amoxicillin). Untreated angle-closure glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss. If these eye problems occur, symptoms usually occur within hours to weeks of starting this medicine. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as vision changes (eg, decreased vision clearness) or eye pain. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience burning, numbness, or tingling; confusion; decreased urination; drowsiness; dry mouth; excessive thirst; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; mental or mood changes; muscle cramps, pain, or weakness; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; restlessness; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness; shortness of breath; sluggishness; stomach pain; tiredness or weakness; tremor; unusual bruising or bleeding; vision changes; vomiting; or yellowing of the skin or eyes. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include decreased or excessive urination; fainting; fever; flushed face; lightheadedness, especially when standing; nausea; severe dizziness; vomiting; or weakness.
PATIENTS WHO TAKE MEDICINE FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after starting treatment. Be sure to take your medicine even if you may not feel "normal." Tell your doctor if you develop any new symptoms. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out. CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST about how to dispose of unused medicine.
