Methimazole Information:
What is methimazole?
Methimazole is an anti-thyroid drug that is used to treat hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism exists when the thyroid gland is overproducing the hormones T3 and T4. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include an enlarged thyroid gland, tremors, anxiety, thinning skin, brittle hair, fast or irregular heartbeat, trouble sleeping, and muscular weakness that may be mostly felt in the arms and thighs. Methimazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of the T3 and T4 hormones, thereby eliminating the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
How do I take methimazole?
Methimazole comes as a tablet to be taken orally. This medication is usually taken 3 times a day at 8-hour intervals. It is recommended to take this medication with food or milk to avoid nausea or an upset stomach. The size of your doses will depend on the severity of your hyperthyroidism.
Before taking methimazole, tell your doctor if:
- You’ve ever had a blood disease such as low white blood cell count, low platelets, or aplastic anemia, or if you’ve ever had liver disease.
- You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
- You are allergic to methimazole, lactose, or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially blood thinners, beta blockers, diabetes medications, and asthma medications that include theophylline.
What are the possible side effects of taking methimazole?
A severe side effect that could occur from taking methimazole is agranulocytosis, a drop in white blood cell count. This drop in white blood cell count can leave a patient vulnerable to infections and illness. Blood count should be monitored while taking this medication. Other possible side effects from taking methimazole include nausea, vomiting, decreased platelet count, tingling or pricking sensations, joint and muscle pain, peeling of the skin, dizziness, loss of sense of taste, hair loss, itching, rash and swelling. If you experience any flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, fever or chills, contact your doctor immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of methimazole?
If you miss a dose of methimazole, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of methimazole to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store methimazole?
Store methimazole tightly closed in its container at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on methimazole?
Signs of overdose on methimazole include a worsening of side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, joint pain, swelling, and a change in blood count. Some patients who have overdosed may notice a skin rash and itching. Overdose on methimazole is rare. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on methimazole, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Do not take methimazole while pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication can cause damage to the fetus. If this medication is required for the health of the mother, the benefits and disadvantages should be discussed with a doctor, and a minimal dosage prescribed if it is necessary. This medication may cause a decrease in white blood cell count. Have your blood levels checked regularly while taking methimazole.
