What is montelukast?

Montelukast is a leukotriene agonist drug that works by inhibiting leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are produced by white blood cells or leukocytes. They are a part of the body’s immune system response that produces inflammation and constriction in the airways. By stopping the effect of leukotrienes in the bronchial passages, symptoms of allergies and asthma are relieved. Montelukast is sometimes prescribed along with a corticosteroid to treat asthma, as corticosteroids are more effective in the treatment of asthma attacks.

How do I take montelukast?

Warnings

Chewable montelukast tablets contain phenylalanine (aspartame). Montelukast is not to be used for the treatment of asthma attacks.
