Nystatin Information:
What is nystatin?
Nystatin is a generic topical or oral antifungal medication that is used to treat fungal infections throughout the body. In the U.S., nystatin is only available with a prescription from your doctor. It is effective against the growth of Candida yeast which is the cause of the common vaginal yeast infection. This medication is not effective for the treatment of bacterial or viral infections. Nystatin works by binding to the fungal cell membrane, forming holes in its surface. The holes in the cells’ membranes cause the fungal cells to leak the essential nutrient potassium, which ultimately results in the death of those cells. This medication does not have the same lethal effect on animal and plant cells.
How do I take nystatin?
You can buy nystatin at your local pharmacy as a cream, ointment, powder, oral suspension, or tablet. If using the oral suspension to treat a mouth or intestinal infection, you will use the medication three to five times daily. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor. Always shake liquid nystatin well before taking your medication. If treating a mouth infection, put a half a dose in each side of your mouth. Keep it in your mouth for several minutes before swallowing. To treat an intestinal infection, just swallow your dose immediately.
Nystatin topical cream or ointment may be used several times a day as directed by your doctor to treat skin infections. Wash and dry the affected area before applying the medication. Then apply a layer of nystatin to the infection and thoroughly massage it into the skin. Wash your hands after each application.
Nystatin powder is used to treat fungal infections of the feet. Dust the powder onto your feet and into whatever shoes or socks you will be wearing. Nystatin vaginal cream and tablets are used to treat yeast infections. This medication may be used once or twice daily for up to two weeks. Follow instructions provided by your doctor. This medication comes with an applicator for insertion. Wash your hands after each application.
- You are allergic to nystatin or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
- You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
- You are taking prescription or non-prescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, especially brewer's yeast.
What are the possible side effects of taking nystatin?
Side effects from taking or using nystatin are not common. Rarely reported adverse effects include skin irritation, slight burning or itching, rash, and eczema. If signs of allergic reaction such as hives or swelling appear, wash the site of application at once and call your doctor. Side effects from oral nystatin may include nausea, upset stomach, and diarrhea.
What if I forget to take a dose of nystatin?
If you forget to take or apply a dose of nystatin, use the missed dose as soon you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not use a double dose to compensate. Finish all the medication that was prescribed to you by your doctor as a course of treatment in order to prevent a relapse. This may mean adding one extra day of treatment in order to finish all the doses.
How do I store nystatin?
Store nystatin tightly closed in its original container at room temperature. Keep away excess heat and light. Dispose of any expired medication.
What happens if I overdose on nystatin?
Overdose on nystatin has not been reported. Excessive use of oral nystatin has resulted in nausea and upset stomach. Excessive topical use may result in skin irritation. If someone has accidently ingested topical nystatin, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
