What is Prometrium?
Prometrium is the drug progesterone, a female hormone used in hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women who have not undergone a hysterectomy. Because it helps moderate estrogen levels in the uterus, it is used in conjunction with estrogen to prevent thickening of the uterine lining in order to reduce the risk of developing uterine cancer. It may also be prescribed to induce menstruation in women of childbearing age who have stopped menstruating; in this application, it works by replenishing diminished levels of natural progesterone.
How do I take Prometrium?
Prometrium is administered as a capsule that is taken orally with water and without regard to food. Do not crush, split, break, or chew the Prometrium pill. This medication may be prescribed on a rotating basis, alternating periods of taking and not taking the drug. Your doctor will determine the dosing schedule; follow the prescription instructions exactly. Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking this medication without first obtaining permission from your doctor.
Before taking Prometrium, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to progesterone, peanuts, hormone replacement medications, oral contraceptives, or any of the ingredients in the Prometrium drug

What are the possible side effects of taking Prometrium?
Some serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention have been reported by those taking Prometrium. These include, but are not limited to, migraines, tachycardia, loss of coordination, depression, coughing up blood, bulging eyes, breast lumps, loss of balance, swollen or painful legs, vision problems, seizures, severe dizziness, fainting, bodily tremors, sharp chest pain, shortness of breath, speech difficulties, stomach pain or swelling, unexpected vaginal bleeding, weakening or numbing of an arm or leg, or signs of an allergic reaction. Mild side effects may include painful or tender breasts, constipation, coughing, diarrhea, anxiety, headache, irritability, mood swings, joint or bone pain, urination problems, runny nose, sneezing, tiredness, upset stomach, vaginal discharge, or vomiting. Should any of these symptoms persist or intensify, contact your doctor.
What if I forget to take a dose of Prometrium?
If you forget to take your Prometrium pill as scheduled, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not increase the number taken or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Prometrium?
Keep Prometrium capsules tightly sealed in their original container, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not remove one until you are ready to take it. Dispose of any expired or unused doses according to the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Prometrium?
If it is thought an overdose of Prometrium has occurred, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or become unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
