Propecia Information:
What is Propecia?
Propecia (finasteride) is an intracellular Type II 5α-reductase inhibitor medication that stops this enzyme from converting testosterone into DHT, making the testosterone hormone more available in the body. This particular finasteride formulation is used to treat male pattern baldness, particularly in the anterior mid-scalp and vertex mid-scalp.
How do I take Propecia?
Take this medication as prescribed and always follow your doctor's instructions. Women and children should never handle this medication; if they are exposed to a broken or crushed tablet, wash that area of skin immediately. Take 1 tablet of Propecia 1 time by mouth with a full glass (8oz) of water, with or without food, at the same time every day. It may take 3 months for you to see results.
Before taking Propecia, tell your doctor if:
- You have had an allergic reaction to Avodart (dutasteride).
- You are at risk for, have, or have a history of prostate cancer
- You are at risk for or have had male breast cancer.
- You live with a woman who is or may become pregnant.
- You are concerned about sexual side effects.
- You will be unable to have regular blood tests or prostate checks for any reason.
- You have or have a history of liver disease, disorder, or problems, including abnormal results for liver enzyme tests.
- You have or have a history of bladder muscle disorder.
- You are unable to urinate or have problems urinating, or you have a urethra stricture.
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs, medication, supplements, or vitamins.
What are the possible side effects of taking Propecia?
Some Propecia side effects are severe and require immediate emergency medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (swelling in the face and lips, swelling in the tongue and throat, hives and itching, difficulty breathing), breast cancer symptoms (changes in the breast area including lumps or swelling, nipple discharge, breast pain or tenderness), or prostate cancer.
Common Propecia side effects include: swelling in your hands or feet, skin rash, headache, dizziness or feeling like you may pass out, weakness, runny nose, or sexual effects (loss of interest in sex, trouble achieving an erection, trouble reaching orgasm, abnormal ejaculation, and impotence).
What if I forget to take a dose of Propecia?
Never take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose. If it is nearly time to take your next Propecia dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.
How do I store Propecia?
Always keep the Propecia bottle tightly closed when not in use. Store at room temperature where it is not exposed to excess heat, light, or moisture.
What happens if I overdose on Propecia?
An overdose of this medication is not expected to be life-threatening, however, you should call your local poison control center or seek medical assistance if you suspect an overdose.
Warnings
This medication is for men only. Women and children should never be exposed to Propecia because it affects hormones. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should be especially careful as this medication can cause birth defects. Propecia may increase your risk for prostate cancer or male breast cancer.
Your doctor will want to do regular blood tests to ensure you are responding well to this medication and to check your prostate specific antigen. Always keep your doctor and lab appointments.
Propecia is intended to work over the long term with regular use, and discontinuing the medication may result in re-losing hair in 12 months after treatment.
Be careful when sitting up or standing, as you may get dizzy or faint. Propecia may cause sexual side effects, and these side effects may be permanent. You should discuss any concerns with your doctor.
Brand Names
There is a generic for Propecia (finasteride) as well as one other brand (Proscar, a medication for treating enlarged prostates) currently on the market. Because Propecia is the only version of this medication used for hair loss, Propecia’s cost is higher than some other hair loss prevention methods (upwards of $120 for a month's supply). Click Claim Discount and you can download or print off a free Propecia coupon that will let you save 90% on the retail cost of Propecia at your local pharmacy.
