Supartz Information:
Supartz is a viscosupplement that is similar to the fluid that naturally surrounds joints in the human body. When injected into the knee joint, it provides lubrication and shock absorption, which can help relieve knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis.
Your doctor or another healthcare professional will inject Supartz into your knee joint on a regular schedule (usually once a week for three to five weeks). Keep all appointments and follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Your doctor may tell you to rest your knee or apply ice after an injection to reduce the likelihood of pain and swelling.
Before using Supartz, tell your doctor if:
· You are allergic to sodium hyaluronate or have any other allergies
· You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs, supplements, or vitamins
· You have an infection in your knee or in the skin surrounding the knee
· You have or have had circulation issues or blood clots in your legs
· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
After receiving a Supartz injection, you may experience mild pain, warmth, swelling, or stiffness at the injection site. You may also experience nausea, stomach pain, back pain, headache, cold-like symptoms, numbness or tingling, or fatigue. These side effects are not expected to be serious, but if you have any conditions that get worse or last a long time, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any rare but serious side effects, including severe pain or swelling around the knee, excessive sweating, chills, a fast heart rate, anxiety, or confusion.
If you miss an appointment to receive a Supartz injection, call your doctor to find out what to do.
Since Supartz is injected in a healthcare setting, you shouldn’t need to worry about storing syringes or vials of medicine.
Your doctor will administer the Supartz drug in a controlled dose, so you are highly unlikely to experience an overdose. However, if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing, you should get medical attention right away.
Follow your doctor’s instructions for self-care after you receive each injection. Your doctor will likely tell you to avoid strenuous activities such as jogging for at least 48 hours. Your doctor may also tell you to avoid standing for more than an hour at a time for several days after an injection.
As a specialty drug, Supartz is only available in a branded form. While there may not be a cheaper generic version, keep in mind that you can save up to 20% on the cost of Supartz when you get a coupon from HelpRx.
