What is Tussicaps?
Tussicaps is a brand name for the antitussive combination of the antihistamine chlorpheniramine and the opioid hydrocodone. It is prescribed to treat the symptoms of allergies and the common cold including runny nose, coughing, sneezing, and watery eyes. It works by reducing histamines in the body as well as suppressing the cough center of the brain. Tussicaps is listed as a controlled substance and is available only with a prescription.
How do I take Tussicaps?
Tussicaps is administered in capsule form and taken orally with water. Swallow the medication whole; do not crush, split, or chew them. Because of its potential for abuse, keep track of the number of capsules prescribed and taken so as to detect unauthorized consumption. What are the possible side effects of taking Tussicaps?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Tussicaps. Mild side effects include euphoria, anxiety, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nose, and throat, headache, increased chest congestion, lightheadedness, loss of appetite, constricted pupils, nausea, and vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include symptoms of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), chest tightness, problems urinating, slowed heartbeat, arrhythmia, or vision problems.
What if I forget to take a dose of Tussicaps?
If you are taking the Tussicaps drug on an as-needed basis, take a missed dose as soon as you remember and are able. If you are on a dosing schedule and you miss a dose, follow the instructions that accompanied the prescription. Do not take multiple capsules or increase the frequency of dosing to make up for one that was missed. Do not take more than four doses in a twenty-four period.

What happens if I overdose on Tussicaps?
If an overdose of Tussicaps is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include dilated or constricted pupils, seizures, cold, clammy, or blue skin, extreme sleepiness, slowed heartbeat, and death.
