What is ziprasidone?
Ziprasidone is an antipsychotic drug of the benzisothiazoyl class of medications and is prescribed to treat symptoms of schizophrenia as well as mania and mixed episodes of mania in those suffering from bipolar disorder. Ziprasidone is a prescription-only medicine that works by changing how certain chemicals affect the brain.
How do I take ziprasidone?
Ziprasidone is administered as a capsule that is taken orally, usually twice a day with food. Your doctor may start you on a low dose strength and increase it over time. The exact strength, frequency of dosing, and dosing schedule are determined by the patient profile and the condition being treated. Do not crush, chew, or break the capsule. It may take a few weeks before the benefits of this medication are realized. This drug will not cure your condition; continue taking it even if you feel well.
Before taking ziprasidone, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to ziprasidone or any of the ingredients in the capsules
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking antidepressants, medications for hypertension, other antipsychotic medications, dopamine agonists, antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, or diuretics
- You are taking amiodarone, aprepitant, arsenic trioxide, cabergoline, carbamazepine, chlorpromazine, clarithromycin, cyclosporine, delavirdine diltiazem, disopyramide, dofetilide, dolasetron, droperidol, efavirenz, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, levodopa, lovastatin, moxifloxacin, nefazodone, pentamidine, pimozide, probucol, procainamide, quinidine, ropinirole, sertraline, sotalol, tacrolimus, thioridazine, verapamil, or zafirlukast
- You have, or have had, QT syndrome, a heart attack, heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, or a stroke or mini-stroke
- You have, or have had, seizures, schizophrenia, breast cancer, low blood levels of potassium or magnesium, diabetes, or liver disease
- You have difficulty swallowing
What are the possible side effects of taking ziprasidone?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking the ziprasidone drug. Mild symptoms include weight gain, stomach pain, runny nose, restlessness, muscle pain, loss of appetite, malaise, headache, diarrhea, cough, constipation, and anxiety. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider for assistance.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, peeling or blistered skin, itching; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), arrhythmia, chills, confusion, fever, muscle stiffness, priapism, tremors, sweating, or uncontrollable facial or body tics or spasms.
What if I forget to take a dose of ziprasidone?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of ziprasidone, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of capsules taken to compensate for a missed dose. If you miss two or more consecutive doses, contact your healthcare provider.
How do I store ziprasidone?
Store ziprasidone in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused capsules according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on ziprasidone?
If an overdose of ziprasidone is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include anxiety, drowsiness, slurred speech, sudden, uncontrollable movements, or shaking.
Warnings
Ziprasidone may make you drowsy or cause orthostatic hypotension; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Adults 65 and older with dementia who take ziprasidone have an increased risk of a stroke, mini-stroke, or death. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Ziprasidone may cause hyperglycemia, and may also increase the risk of development of diabetes in those with schizophrenia.
