Abstral Information:
What is Abstral?
Abstral is a sublingual form of fentanyl, meaning that it comes as a tablet that is dissolved under the tongue. Fentanyl is an opioid drug that changes the way the brain responds to pain. It is considered a controlled substance due to the risk of abuse. Patients who need this medication will have to register for a special distribution program, and doctors should only prescribe Abstral to people who have severe pain due to cancer and have already been taking another opioid drug for at least a week. Abstral helps manage “breakthrough” cancer pain (i.e. pain not controlled by other drugs).
How do I take Abstral?
The Abstral drug is typically taken on an as-needed basis at the first sign of breakthrough pain, but you should not take more than one dose in a two-hour period. Make sure your hands are dry before you remove a tablet from its blister packet. Place the tablet under your tongue as far back as possible, and do not swallow, chew, or suck on it (the tablet will dissolve on its own). Do not eat or drink anything until the tablet has dissolved completely. Do not suddenly stop taking Abstral without talking to your doctor, as you may experience withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will likely have you decrease your dosage gradually.
Before taking Abstral, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to fentanyl, or you have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have a brain disorder or head injury
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have a breathing disorder, such as COPD or asthma
- You have a personal or family history of mental illness or substance abuse
- You have any stomach problems
- You have pancreatitis
- You have difficulty urinating for any reason
- You have gallbladder disease
- You have mouth sores or ulcers
- Children live in the home where you will store your medication
- You are breastfeeding or pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Abstral?
Side effects of Abstral can include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, headache, constipation, or swollen hands and feet. If any of these side effects persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any rare but serious side effects, including unusual mental changes, severe stomach pain, or difficulty urinating. Get emergency medical attention if you experience slow or shallow breathing, fainting, seizures, or difficulty staying awake.
What if I forget to take a dose of Abstral?
Because Abstral is taken on an as-needed basis, missing a dose should not be an issue.
How do I store Abstral?
Keep Abstral at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Because this medication has a high potential for abuse, it’s very important that you store it somewhere that cannot be easily accessed by others. If you no longer need this medication and are unsure how to safely dispose of it, talk to your pharmacist or local waste disposal company.
What happens if I overdose on Abstral?
Overdosing on Abstral is very dangerous and may cause a slow heartbeat, slow breathing, or loss of consciousness. Get emergency medical attention if you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug.
Warnings
Because Abstral can cause drowsiness or dizziness, you should avoid driving or performing other tasks that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you. Avoid grapefruit products, as they can cause unwanted side effects when they interact with fentanyl. Do not drink alcohol, as the interaction of alcohol and fentanyl can cause dangerous and potentially fatal side effects. Do not use Abstral to treat any type of pain other than the pain it has been prescribed to treat. If you notice Abstral becoming less effective over time, tell your doctor.
