Actonel Information:
What is Actonel?
Actonel is a type of drug known as a bisphosphonate. It helps treat osteoporosis and Paget’s disease by slowing bone loss and maintaining strong bones. In some cases, it may also be prescribed to treat other conditions that put individuals at a greater risk for bone loss.
How do I take Actonel?
Actonel is usually taken once a day; however, you should follow your doctor’s instructions if she or he has told you otherwise. Take the Actonel drug in the morning, before eating, drinking, or taking any other medications. Swallow the pill whole, drink a glass of water, and avoid lying down, eating, or drinking anything other than water for at least 30 minutes.
Before taking Actonel, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication or any other bisphosphonates
- You have any other known allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications
- You are unable to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes
- You have a history of stomach, intestinal, or esophagus problems
- You have difficulty swallowing
- You have low blood calcium levels
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Actonel?
While many people take the Actonel drug without experiencing any serious side effects, it is important to be aware of potential issues. Some people experience an upset stomach after taking this medication; this may go away on its own, but if it persists or worsens, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any of the following rare but serious side effects: severe muscle, bone, or joint pain; unusual thigh, hip, or groin pain; vision problems; severe heartburn; difficulty swallowing; chest pain; abdominal pain; black stools; or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
What if I forget to take a dose of Actonel?
If you miss a dose of Actonel, skip it and continue with your usual dosing schedule the next day. You should never double the dose or take two doses in one day to catch up.
How do I store Actonel?
Keep Actonel at room temperature, away from light and moisture and out of reach of pets and children. If your medication has expired or you no longer need it, talk to your pharmacist about how to safely dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on Actonel?
Overdosing on Actonel can be dangerous; contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if you or someone in your household has taken more than the prescribed amount of this medication.
Warnings
Your doctor should examine your mouth before you start taking Actonel to determine if taking this drug is likely to put you at risk for developing serious jawbone problems. If you have surgery scheduled, let your doctor or dentist know that you are taking Actonel. You may need to stop taking this medication.
