What is Actoplus Met XR?

Actoplus Met XR is a combination of the diabetes medications pioglitazone and metformin and it is prescribed, along with exercise and dietary changes, to treat Type 2 diabetes in those not using daily insulin injections; it works by controlling blood sugar levels. Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione that helps the body use insulin. Metformin is a biguanide, used to decrease glucose absorption and increase the body’s response to insulin. Actoplus Met XR is not prescribed for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes.

How do I take Actoplus Met XR?

Actoplus Met XR is a tablet that is taken orally once a day with water and food. Do not crush, chew, break, or split the tablet; swallow it whole. Take this medication only as directed. 

Before taking Actoplus Met XR, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to pioglitazone, metformin, or any of the ingredients in Actoplus Met XR
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking medication to treat asthma, hypertension, mental illness, or a thyroid disease
  • You are taking hormone-based contraceptives or are undergoing hormone replacement therapy
  • You are taking diuretics, nausea medications, or oral steroids
  • You are taking medications to treat diabetes, including insulin
  • You are taking beta-blockers, quinidine, morphine, atorvastatin, amiloride, gemfibrozil, calcium channel blockers, ketoconazole, phenytoin, midazolam, nifedipine, zonisamide, rifampin, ACE inhibitors, digoxin, furosemide, isoniazid, procainamide, quinine, ranitidine, topiramate, acetazolamide, triamterene, trimethoprim, vancomycin, or niacin
  • You are being treated for a mental illness
  • You have, or have had, a stroke, elevated triglyceride or cholesterol levels, heart attack, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, or arrhythmia
  • You have or have had diabetic ketoacidosis, metabolic acidosis, diabetic eye disease, or bladder cancer
  • You have, or have had, kidney or liver disease, a serious infection, severe diarrhea or vomiting, or sleep apnea
  • Your exercise or eating patterns have changed.

What are the possible side effects of taking Actoplus Met XR?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Actoplus Met XR. Mild symptoms include indigestion, heartburn, gas, diarrhea, bloating, sore throat, constipation, stomach pain, headache, flushed skin, muscle pain, metallic taste in the mouth, changes to toe or fingernails, or pain in the arms or legs. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; hives, rash, or itching; difficulty breathing or swallowing), abdominal, chest, or back pain, blood in the urine, symptoms of jaundice, problems urinating, changes to vision or a loss of vision, and changes in urine color.

What if I forget to take a dose of Actoplus Met XR?

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Actoplus Met XR, do so as soon as you remember and are able. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, however, skip the one missed and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do increase the number of pills taken or change the dosing regimen to make up for the one missed.  

How do I store Actoplus Met XR?

Keep Actoplus Met XR tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the tablets to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Actoplus Met XR?

If an overdose of Actoplus Met XR is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, lightheadedness, arrhythmia, dizziness, loss of appetite, slowed hear rate, rapid breathing, chills, symptoms of jaundice, weakness, or extreme fatigue.

Warnings

Actoplus Met XR may cause or worsen lactic acidosis, liver problems, kidney problems, bladder cancer, or congestive heart failure. This medication is not used to treat Type 1 diabetes. Wear a diabetic identification bracelet to ensure proper treatment in an emergency. Actoplus Met XR must be taken with food. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this drug. Actoplus Met XR may increase the risk of bone fractures in women.

Actoplus Met XR is the brand name of a proprietary combination of the diabetes medications pioglitazone and metformin; it is also available as Actoplus Met, but do not substitute one for the other without a doctor’s written permission as the formula are different.
