Acyclovir Information:
What is acyclovir?
Acyclovir is an antiviral medication that works to slow and stop the spread of viral infections such as chickenpox and a variety of infections caused by the herpes virus such as cold sores, genital herpes, cytomegalovirus and shingles. It is also used to prevent herpes breakouts. Acyclovir works by inserting itself into viral DNA, preventing further growth of the strand. It comes as a tablet, capsule, oral suspension, or as an ointment to be applied topically.
How do I take acyclovir?
You can buy acyclovir in your local pharmacy with a prescription from your doctor. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor for your specific condition. The acyclovir capsules, tablets and suspension are to be taken orally two to five times daily for five to ten days. If taking the oral suspension, shake the bottle before each use to make sure the liquid is evenly distributed. If taking acyclovir as a means of prevention, it can be taken two to five times a day for up to year. Take all medication prescribed for your treatment. Do not stop taking the medication, even if you feel better. This could result in a relapse.
If using topical acyclovir cream or ointment to treat cold sores, apply it to the affected area five to six times a day for four to seven days as per your doctor’s recommendations. The medication is best applied at the first signs of an outbreak. Wash your hands before and after applying the medication or use sterile gloves.
Before taking acyclovir, tell your doctor if:
- You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medications, herbal supplements or vitamins, especially antibiotics, fungicides, anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs, and HIV or AIDS medications.
- You have or have ever had any autoimmune diseases or problems with your immune system.
- You are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or are breast feeding.
- You have or have ever had kidney disease.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in acyclovir or other antiviral medications.
Acyclovir does not prevent the spread of the herpes virus or any other virus to another individual.
What are the possible side effects of taking hydroxyzine HCL?
Side effects from taking hydroxyzine hydrochloride include dizziness, fainting, incoordination, sleepiness, dry mouth, dry eyes, constipation, elevated heart rate and headache. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience seizures, confusion, accelerated or irregular heartbeat, or tremors.
What if I forget to take a dose of acyclovir?
If you forget to take a dose of acyclovir, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, and take the rest of your doses at regularly-spaced intervals. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of acyclovir.
How do I store acyclovir?
Store acyclovir at room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep it tightly closed in the container it came in and out of reach of children. Throw away any expired medication, and talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
What happens if I overdose on acyclovir?
Signs of overdose on acyclovir include seizures, extreme fatigue, decreased urination, swelling of extremities, agitation, and loss of consciousness. Overdose on acyclovir is more likely to occur in those with decreased kidney function. If you or someone you know has overdosed on acyclovir, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual is unconscious or not breathing, contact 911 emergency services.
