Infectious diseases are a broad category of diseases that can cause unpredictable effects. One person may carry a harmful virus or bacteria, yet show no symptoms, while another may have a mild reaction, and yet another can have a severe one. Despite this unpredictability, they can often be treated, though the best cold medicine, flu medicine, or other kind of medication can be expensive. What is an Infection?
Infections are any disease that is caused by germs. These germs can be bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Most of the world’s bacteria either causes no reaction in humans or actually helps us. Bacteria in the stomach help to break food down into vitamins and minerals, while bacteria on the skin actually helps to prevent harmful bacteria from entering our bloodstream and causing damage. For that reason, antibiotics should be taken with care so as not to disrupt the beneficial bacteria for longer than necessary.
How can I manage an Infection?
Monitoring
Infections, especially in children, are fairly common. It is estimated that the average child will have at least six to eight respiratory infections each year, including colds, ear infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, or pneumonia. For less severe afflictions, the infection will likely resolve itself and you only need to manage the symptoms.
Antibiotics Drug Therapy
More severe infections require treatment. The most effective type of treatment varies depending on the type of infection. At the onset of symptoms, visit your doctor so he can determine exactly what type of medication is appropriate. For example, the best strep throat treatment is often penicillin or amoxicillin, whereas yeast infection medication is often Lotrimin or Terazol.
What are the different types of Medication for Infections?
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are used when the infection is caused by bacteria. Cold medicine, flu medicine, and most coughs and bronchitis medicine are all generally antibiotics. It is important to follow the dosage instructions exactly, even if the symptoms disappear before the medicine is finished. If you stop taking the medication too early, the bacteria may not have completely cleared your system and the bacteria can become resistant to the antibiotic. This may cause the infection to reappear and be unresponsive to additional antibiotic treatment.
Antivirals
Antivirals are used for specific viral infections. They work by stopping the virus from multiplying rather than killing it outright. For that reason, only viral infections that the body can destroy like Influenza A and B are effectively “cured.” Viruses like HIV, herpes, and hepatitis B and C will remain in the body and become chronic conditions. Antivirals help to manage them, but not cure them. For example, hepatitis treatment often consists of a regular course of interferon to manage the symptoms.
Antifungals
Antifungal medication is used to treat fungus infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, and candidiasis. Yeast infection treatments can normally be purchased over-the-counter in various forms, though always as an antifungal. Though antifungals are effective cures in many cases, they can often trigger allergic reactions and interact strongly with other medications.
Antiparasitics
Parasites can live both on your body and inside your body. Different parasites require very different antiparasitic drugs, so contact your doctor to find which is appropriate for your infection type.
What are the symptoms of Infections?
Symptoms of infections can range from sore throat to swelling, itchiness, or pus formation. Infections are often symptomless. Because of the wide variety of symptoms, contact your doctor to determine the most effective course of treatment.
