Avage Information:
What is Avage?
Avage is the brand name for tazarotene, a topical retinoid, similar to Vitamin A, in cream form. It is prescribed treat psoriasis and to reduce fine wrinkles, lesions, redness, and some dark and light spotting of the skin. Avage is part of a total skin care program that includes reducing exposure to the sun.
How do I take Avage?
Avage is a topical cream that is applied to the affected area once a day, usually at night. Before using, wash and dry your hands and the treatment zone with a mild cleanser and wait 20 to 30 minutes before applying the cream to ensure thorough drying. Apply a small amount and gently rub it in, taking care not to let it come in contact with other areas of the skin. Wash your hands after applying (unless the hands are the target area). If you use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 15 or higher, apply the sunscreen in the morning. If you use other creams or lotions, they can be applied before or after using Avage; if applied before, wait fifteen or twenty minutes to ensure complete absorption.
Before taking Avage, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to tazarotene or any of the ingredients in Avage
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You use any form of birth control
- You are taking fluoroquinolones, thiazide diuretics, phenothiazine, Vitamin A (or products containing vitamin A), tetracycline, or sulfonamides
- You are able to become pregnant
- You have high blood lipid levels, a sunburn, or eczema
What are the possible side effects of taking Avage?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Avage. Less severe symptoms include mild burning, stinging, drying, itching, redness, or peeling at the application site. However, if any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact a physician.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, or severe itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), changes in skin color at the application site, the appearance of grooves or new lines in the skin, or pain or swelling of the treated area.
What if I forget to take a dose of Avage?
If you forget to apply Avage at the scheduled time, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled application, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount applied or change the schedule to make up for one that was missed.
