Azurette Information:

What is Azurette?

Azurette is an oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. The combination of the estrogen, ethinyl estradiol, and the progestin, desogestrel, is used to halt ovulation. These substances also alter the cervical mucus and the uterine lining, preventing an egg from attaching to the uterine wall. Azurette may also be prescribed to women who need help controlling acne or to those who have premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

How do I take Azurette?

Azurette is dispensed in 28-tablet packets, and one pill is taken per day. The first twenty-one pills are active; the remaining seven are not, functioning as reminder pills. Take the first pill on the first day of your menstrual cycle or on the Sunday immediately following. Continue taking each of the tablets in the cycle on a daily basis, including the reminder pills, in their proper order before beginning a new cycle.  If this is the first time taking an oral contraceptive, use an alternative means of birth control for the first seven days. Taking a pill at the same time every day makes it easier to remember. Taking them with food or milk can prevent nausea. Notify your doctor before you stop taking Azurette.

Before taking Azurette, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to estrogen, ethinyl estradiol, progestin, desogestrel, or any of the ingredients Azurette
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have, or have had, liver or kidney disease or diabetes
  • You have, or have had, blood clots, especially in your lungs, legs, or eyes;
  • You have, or have a family history of, heart disease, tachycardia, arrhythmia, other cardio vascular conditions, high cholesterol, obesity, cervical, uterine, or vaginal cancer, or breast cancer

What are the possible side effects of taking Azurette?

Mild side effects include menstrual cycle changes, weight change, a white vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, changes in skin color, swollen or tender breasts, and problems with contact lenses. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Azurette?

If you forget to take the daily Azurette pill, refer to the instructions that accompanied your prescription or contact your doctor as to what to do. When you miss a dose, you are at risk of becoming pregnant; use an alternative contraceptive for seven to ten days or until the end of the pill cycle. Do not adjust the dosing regimen unless directed by the instructions included in the medication or approved by your doctor.

How do I store Azurette?

Keep Azurette tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not remove a pill from its package until you are ready to take it. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Azurette?

If an overdose of Azurette is suspected, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include vaginal bleeding and severe nausea.
