Ortho Tri Cyclen Information:
What is Ortho Tri-Cyclen?
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a triphasic oral contraceptive combination of the female hormones ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate. It protects against pregnancy by preventing ovulation as well as initiating changes to uterine lining and cervical mucus, thereby blocking fertilization and preventing an egg from attaching to the uterine wall. In some cases, it may be prescribed to treat acne in women fifteen and older.
How do I take Ortho Tri-Cyclen?
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is an oral contraceptive that is taken on a daily basis, no more than 24 hours apart. The first pill is taken on the first day of a menstrual period, or the first Sunday after the period begins. The date establishes the dosing pattern and the procedure for addressing missed dosages. When a pack is exhausted, start a new one the next day. The 28-day pack contains seven inactive pills that act as reminders; expect a menstrual period to begin when taking these seven. You may experience breakthrough bleeding during the first few months of using Ortho Tri-Cyclen; contact your doctor if the bleeding is heavy, does not stop, or if you have concerns or questions.
Before taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, have recently given birth, or are nursing a child
- You are allergic to ethinyl estradiol, norgestimate, or any of the ingredients in Ortho Tri-Cyclen
- You are taking or using other contraceptives
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially St. John’s wort
- You are taking anti-coagulants, anti-depressants, antibiotics, HIV-protease inhibitors, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDS, antifungals, medication to control seizures, oral steroids, diuretics, or thyroid medication

- You are taking nefazodone, cyclosporine bosentan, atorvastatin, rifampin, modafinil, clofibrate, morphine, cimetidine, fluoxetine, danazol, heparin, verapamil, delavirdine, nefazodone, or diltiazem
- You have, or have had, blood clots, thrombophilia, hypertension, coronary artery disease, a stroke, heart attack, chest pain, tachycardia or arrhythmia, or cerebrovascular disease
- You have, or have had, diabetes, kidney or liver disease, liver tumors, seizures, adrenal problems, gall bladder disease, or migraines or severe headaches

What if I forget to take a dose of Ortho Tri-Cyclen?
If you forget to take one or more of the Ortho Tri-Cyclen pills, follow the instructions that came with the medication as the procedure depends on how many days were missed, where you were in the cycle, and when you first began taking the latest series. Consult your doctor for specific guidance. Continue to take the pills but use an alternate form of birth control in the interim until you are sure the risk of pregnancy has diminished. Do not exceed the prescribed number of pills or the frequency of dosage without a doctor’s guidance.
How do I store Ortho Tri-Cyclen?
Keep the Ortho Tri-Cyclen pills tightly sealed in their original package, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not remove a pill until you are ready to take it. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
