Biltricide Information:
What is Biltricide?
Biltricide is in the anthelmintic class of drug and works to kill certain types of parasites, including Schistosoma and liver flukes. Schistosoma are parasitic worms that can be found in freshwater in certain tropical and subtropical countries; a Schistosoma infection can cause unpleasant symptoms such as fever, joint pain, rash, and itchy skin. Fortunately, a course of Biltricide typically clears parasitic infections in one to two days.
How do I take Biltricide?
Take Biltricide as prescribed with food and plenty of water. Swallow each tablet whole; do not chew or suck on it. Do not break tablets in half unless your doctor has instructed you to do so. Your doctor or pharmacist should provide you with a dosing schedule. Most patients who need this medication take it 3 times a day (about 4 to 6 hours apart) for 1 day.
Before taking Biltricide, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You have taken a drug containing rifampin in the past 4 weeks
- You are suffering from headaches or confusion
- You have any lumps under your skin
- You have had seizures
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have heart disease or an irregular heart rhythm
- You have a parasitic brain or eye infection
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Biltricide?
Biltricide causes parasites to let go of the blood vessel walls so that the body can flush them out, and you may experience certain side effects as the parasites are leaving your body. Side effects may include stomach, joint, or muscle pain; excessive sweating; loss of appetite; fatigue; nausea; headache; and dizziness. Serious side effects are unlikely, but call your doctor right away if you experience a high fever, bloody diarrhea, an irregular heart rate, seizures, or a severe allergic reaction.
What if I forget to take a dose of Biltricide?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for the next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and keep going with your normal dosing schedule. Don’t increase the standard dosage in an effort to catch up.
How do I store Biltricide?
Store Biltricide in a tightly sealed container at room temperature (below 86 degrees Fahrenheit). Because bright light and moisture can negatively affect it, you should avoid storing it in your bathroom. Keep it somewhere that children and pets in your home can’t access.
What happens if I overdose on Biltricide?
The effects of a Biltricide overdose are unknown. If you believe you or someone in your home has taken too much of this medicine, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do. You may need to use a fast-acting laxative.
Warnings
Biltricide may cause dizziness and drowsiness for a day or two, so avoid driving until you know you can do so safely. Limit your alcohol consumption, since alcohol can make some side effects worse. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during your course of treatment.
Brand Names
Biltricide is only available as a brand name drug. While it may not be possible to switch to a cheaper generic form, you can use our Biltricide coupon to significantly reduce what you pay at your pharmacy.
