Cymbalta Information:

Why is this medication prescribed?

Duloxetine is used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; excessive worry and tension that disrupts daily life and lasts for 6 months or longer). Duloxetine is also used to treat pain and tingling caused by diabetic neuropathy (damage to nerves that can develop in people who have diabetes) and fibromyalgia (a long-lasting condition that may cause pain, muscle stiffness and tenderness, tiredness, and difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep). Duloxetine is also used to treat ongoing bone or muscle pain such as lower back pain or osteoarthritis (joint pain or stiffness that may worsen over time). Duloxetine is in a class of medications called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). It works by increasing the amounts of serotonin and norepinephrine, natural substances in the brain that help maintain mental balance and stop the movement of pain signals in the brain.

How do I take clindamycin?

Depending on whether you have a skin condition to be treated topically or an internal infection, clindamycin comes as a lotion, skin cream, gel, foam, capsule, or a liquid to be taken orally. If taking the capsule or liquid by mouth, take your medication at the same time every day with a glass of water. It is usually taken three or four times a day, but follow instructions given to you by your doctor. Do not stop taking clindamycin until you have finished the entire dosage recommended by your doctor, even if you feel better. The infection may relapse and come back stronger if all bacteria is not eliminated. If you are taking liquid clindamycin, shake the bottle before each use.

If using the gel, cream or lotion to treat acne, wash the affected area before using and pat dry. If you are using the can of foam clindamycin to treat acne, wait 30 minutes after washing or shaving your face to apply this product. Dispense the amount of foam needed to cover the affected area into the cap or onto a cold surface rather than into the palm of your hand as it will melt on contact. Do not use this product more often than prescribed as it may irritate the skin.

Other uses for this medicine

Duloxetine is also sometimes used to treat stress urinary incontinence (leakage of urine during physical activity such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, and exercise) in women. Talk to your doctor about using this medication to treat your condition.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Before taking clindamycin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any other medications. If you will be taking clindamycin capsules, tell your doctor if you are allergic to aspirin or yellow dye.
  • You are taking erythromycin (E.E.S, E-Mycin, Erythrocin, others).
  • You have or have ever had asthma, allergies, eczema, kidney or liver disease.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

Always tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take before taking a new medication.

What are the possible side effects of taking clindamycin?

Side effects from clindamycin or clindamycin HCL include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or cramping, rash or itch. High doses of clindamycin may cause a metallic taste in the mouth. Topical clindamycin products may cause contact dermatitis. In rare cases it may cause pseudomembranous colitis.

What storage conditions are needed for this medicine?

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Symptoms of overdose may include the following:

  • seizures
  • dizziness
  • lightheadedness

What other information should I know?

Keep all appointments with your doctor.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.

What is Cymbalta?

Cymbalta is an SNRI drug, or a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It works by increasing the concentration of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine in the synaptic cleft in the brain. This works to elevate mood and productivity. Cymbalta is mainly used to treat depression, but it is sometimes also used to treat anxiety and pain. Cymbalta has successfully treated pain in patients with fibromyalgia and peripheral neuropathy. Because the Cymbalta retail price can be so high, there are companies and organizations that offer Cymbalta discount programs and discount coupons to help make the medication more affordable. Patients without insurance may be able to get free Cymbalta or receive substantial discounts off the regular price through Cymbalta patient assistance.

How do I take Cymbalta?

After purchasing Cymbalta capsules at your local pharmacy using your insurance or a Cymbalta discount program, take your medication at regular intervals as recommended by your doctor. Do not break, open, crush or chew the capsules. Swallow whole with a glass of water. Cymbalta may be taken with or without food, but food is recommended for those with a sensitive stomach to avoid nausea. Do not abruptly stop taking this medication. Talk to your doctor about slowly decreasing dosage. It may take one to four weeks to experience the full benefits of taking Cymbalta.

Before taking Cymbalta, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement, especially other antidepressants, St. John’s wort or tryptophan.
  • You have allergies to medicines, foods, or any ingredients in Cymbalta.
  • You or a family member has a history of bipolar disorder (manic-depression), other mental or mood problems, suicidal thoughts or attempts, or alcohol or substance abuse.
  • You have a history of seizures, heart problems, high blood pressure, kidney problems, diabetes, stomach or bowel problems such as constipation, or increased eye pressure.
  • You are dehydrated, have trouble urinating, have low blood sodium levels, or drink alcohol.
  • You are taking a medicine that contains methylene blue.

This medication may cause high blood pressure. Have your blood pressure checked regularly while taking Cymbalta. This medication may also cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Get up slowly from a reclining position. Alcohol may increase the side effects of Cymbalta.

What are the possible side effects of taking Cymbalta?

Possible side effects from taking Cymbalta include: nausea and vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, loss of appetite, fatigue, sweating, dry mouth, stomach pain, muscle cramps, trembling, change in urination, and a change in libido.

More serious and less common side effects include: swelling of the abdomen, dark urine, blurred vision, fever, extreme fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, blistered skin, hoarseness, and difficult breathing or swallowing. These are not all the possible side effects from taking Cymbalta. If you experience unusual or serious side effects, contact your doctor right away.

What if I forget to take a dose of Cymbalta?

If you miss a dose of Cymbalta, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Cymbalta to make up for a missed one.

How do I store Cymbalta?

Cymbalta is ideally stored at 77 degrees Fahrenheit, but may be stored briefly between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication away from heat, moisture and light. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets and away from anyone that is prone to drug abuse.
