It's prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain by altering the way your central nervous system senses pain. It is most often prescribed as pills, though it is available as an injection from medical personnel and may be available as an oral solution.
This medication can be habit-forming; however, you should not discontinue taking Demerol pills out of fear of mental or physical dependence. Suddenly stopping your medication may cause withdrawal effects.
How do I take Demerol?
Always take this medication exactly as prescribed, and never take more than prescribed or for longer than prescribed. As you prepare to discontinue Demerol medication, your doctor will instruct you on how to reduce your doses.
When taking Demerol pills, they are often prescribed as 1 pill taken by mouth ever 3 to 4 hours daily. Do not crush, break, or chew your pills, and do not try to take this medication by inhaling or injecting it, as it can be fatal.
If you've been prescribed the oral solution, only take this liquid orally. Use a dose-measuring cup or spoon to ensure you do not get too much or too little.
Before taking Demerol, tell your doctor if:
