Farxiga Information:

What is Farxiga?

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is an oral medication used to control blood-glucose levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes. (Do not use this medication to treat Type 1 Diabetes.) It is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor which causes the kidneys to filter out sugar to be excreted through urination. It may be prescribed alone or in combination with other medications, however it should be used as a part of a larger treatment plan including diet and exercise.

How do I take Farxiga?

Always take this medication as prescribed, and not for longer or shorter amounts of time. It is usually taken 1 time daily in the morning with or without food. Be sure to keep track of your blood glucose levels, and consult your doctor if you feel your sugar levels are too low to take your medication.

Before taking Farxiga, tell your doctor if:

• You have previously had an allergic reaction to oral antidiabetic medication.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breast feed.
• You are currently on a low salt diet.
• You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or disorder.
• You have or have a history of bladder cancer.
• You have low blood pressure or take blood pressure medications.
• You are taking any other antidiabetic medications.
• You do not have regular access to some kind of sugar/food for any reason.

What are the possible side effects of taking Farxiga?

Some Farxiga side effects can be severe and require emergency medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in the face, lips, tongue, throat), urinating more than usual, difficult or painful urination, a burning sensation while urinating, blood or discoloration of urine, problems urinating or little to no urine, rapid weight gain or swelling, heavy sweating, hot but dry skin, feeling hot and extremely thirsty, signs of genital infection.

Common Farxiga side effects include: back pain, mild nausea or vomiting.

What if I forget to take a dose of Farxiga?

Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose, so if it's almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.

How do I store Farxiga?

Always store Farxiga at room temperature and away from excess heat or moisture (e.g., a bathroom).

What happens if I overdose on Farxiga?

Hypoglycemia is a potential result of overdose -- be sure your friends and family know how to help you in an emergency.

If you suspect an overdose, call your local poison control shelter or seek medical attention.

Warnings

Farxiga may cause low blood pressure. Contact your doctor to determine the best course of action. Keep an emergency source of sugar that you can eat in case of hypoglycemia while taking Farxiga. If you cannot eat or drink, you may need to take a glucagon injection.

Similarly, watch for signs of hyperglycemia. Talk with your doctor about how to handle this without taking extra Farxiga.

This medication can give false readings on certain blood tests. Always tell your doctor or lab personnel that you're taking it. Avoid sitting up or standing up quickly, as it may cause dizziness. This medication should never be used to treat Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Brand Names

Farxiga is dapagliflozen, however the generic is not available on the market. In some cases, a combination medication called Xigduo (dapagliflozen and metformin) may be available, but there are currently no alternate brands for Farxiga available. Because of this, the retail cost of Farxiga can become quite expensive. Take advantage of our Farxiga savings card and take 75% of your local pharmacy's Farxiga price.
