Fentora Information:
What is Fentora?
Fentora comes in the form of a buccal tablet, which is a tablet that dissolves in the mouth. It contains fentanyl, a powerful opioid drug that is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Fentora is prescribed to cancer patients that experience breakthrough pain or pain that is sometimes felt regardless of being on around-the-clock pain killers. Fentora should only be used by opioid-tolerant patients or else it may cause decreases in respiration that can be fatal.
How do I take Fentora?
One Fentora tablet should be placed under the tongue or between the back molars and cheek until it dissolves completely. It may not be used more often than once every four hours. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Your doctor will prescribe the right amount based on the other medications you are taking. Taking too much of Fentora can be fatal.
Before taking Fentora, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to fentanyl or any of the other ingredients in Fentora.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, including antihistamines, barbiturates, sedatives, sleeping pills, cold medications, anxiety drugs, or anything that might depress the central nervous system. Also tell your doctor if you are taking antidepressants, nausea medications or any other pain killers.
- You are taking herbal supplements, especially St. John’s wort.
- You drink alcohol.
- You have become dependent on drugs or medications in the past.
- You have low blood pressure or heart problems.
- You have ever suffered from a stroke, brain tumor or head injury.
- You have depression, schizophrenia or another mental illness.
- You have asthma, COPD or trouble breathing.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have seizures.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of taking Fentora?
Fentora drug side effects include nausea, constipation, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and sores or irritation in the mouth where tablets have been dissolved. These side effects may lessen over time. If any of these side effects are severe, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about right away include negative mental or mood changes, hallucinations, confusion, severe abdominal pain, trouble urinating, seizures, difficulty waking up, slow or shallow breathing and fainting.
What if I forget to take a dose of Fentora?
Fentora should only be taken as needed.
How do I store Fentora?
Fentora tablets should be stored in their blister packet at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t allow the medication to freeze and protect it from moisture. Keep Fentora out of reach of children and pets and anyone who suffers from drug abuse.
What happens if I overdose on Fentora?
Signs of overdose include slow and shallow breathing and loss of consciousness. Fentora overdose can be fatal. If you think you or someone else has overdosed on Fentora, call 911.
Warnings
Fentora is a highly addictive drug. Tell your doctor if you regularly drink alcohol or if you have ever been dependent on a drug. Do not share this medication with anyone else. Fentora can be fatal if taken by children or pets.
