What is fluorouracil?

Fluorouracil, an antimetabolite drug, works by killing fast-growing cancerous and precancerous cells. What are the possible side effects of taking fluorouracil?

Some people have reported side effects after using the fluorouracil drug. Less severe symptoms include redness, irritation, burning, pain, skin discoloration, crusting, or soreness at the application or injection site; the injectable form may also cause confusion, dizziness, dry and cracked skin, eye sensitivity to light, teary eyes, hair loss, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, redness, pain, unusual fatigue or weakness, or vision changes. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing); bloody diarrhea; chills; severe stomach pain; vomiting; chest pain; coughing up or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds; nosebleed; changes in urine color; red or tarry stools; mouth or throat sores; swelling, pain, redness, or peeling of skin on the palms and soles of the feet; unusual bleeding or bruising.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of fluorouracil?

If you forget to apply topical fluorouracil, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled application, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount applied or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed. Because the injectable form is administered in a healthcare facility, missing a dose is unlikely.
