Gianvi Information:
What is Gianvi?
Gianvi is a combination progesterone and estrogen contraceptive which is comprised specifically of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Hormone contraceptives prevent pregnancy by inhibiting the release of eggs as well as changing the uterine and cervical linings to prevent sperm from reaching any released eggs. Gianvi is also formulated to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD, and can diminish acne in females already using birth control to prevent pregnancy.
PMDD is not PMS, nor is Gianvi intended to treat PMS. PMDD is a mood disorder listed in the DSM-IV which involves the following at levels with interfere with daily life: the lack of sleep or appetite, headaches, anxiety and depression, trouble concentrating or a lack of energy.
How do I take Gianvi?
Review the medication pamphlet that comes with your Gianvi pack and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. There are two ways to start taking Gianvi: on the first day of your period, or on the first Sunday after your period starts. Take one tablet by mouth daily, at the same time of day every day. When you take the last pill of one pack, begin the next pack the next day so that there's no interruption in your dosage. Do not skip doses, as it will increase your risk of pregnancy.
Before taking Gianvi, tell your doctor if:
- You think you may be pregnant, have recently given birth, or are breast feeding.
- You smoke.
- You wear contacts.
- You have a history of or are currently experiencing any cardiovascular problems, such as high blood pressure, blood-clotting disorders, or heart disease.
- You have a history of or are currently experiencing kidney or liver disease or cancer.
- You have a history of breast, cervical, or uterine cancer.
- You have diabetes or you have a history of problems associated to diabetes, such as with the eyes or kidneys.
- You have HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, or seizure disorders.
- You have experienced severe side effects from previous prescriptions of contraceptives, such as jaundice.
- You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, supplements, or vitamins.
What are the possible side effects of taking Gianvi?
Severe side effects include: a breast lump; increased symptoms of depression and anxiety; sudden headaches or the onset of migraines, or a change in the severity of your migraines; confusion or problems with speech, balance, or vision; sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body; sudden chest pains or shooting pain in one side; rapid breathing or coughing up blood; pain, swelling or a warm flush in your legs; swelling in your hands, ankles or feet; dark urine or clay colored stool; jaundice. If you experience any of these side effects, stop using Gianvi and contact your doctor immediately.
Common side effects include but aren't limited to: bloating and mild nausea, breast tenderness or discharge, a change in appetite or weight, a change in your menstrual period, a change in your sex drive, freckles or melasma, increased growth or loss of hair, vaginal itching.
What if I forget to take a dose of Gianvi?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. It's ok if that means taking 2 doses in the same day. If you've missed two consecutive doses of Gianvi, take 2 pills per day for 2 days, then finish the pack as normal, and use backup birth control for 7 days following the missed doses. Missing more than 2 doses, or missing 2 doses in week 3 of your pack will require starting a new pack; review your medication pamphlet for details. If you miss one dose, and then miss your period immediately following, this may not indicate anything. If you miss 2 doses and then miss a period, or if you miss 2 periods in a row, contact your doctor immediately as you may be pregnant.
How do I store Gianvi?
Store your birth control in the container it came in, at room temperature (68°F to 77°F) and away from moisture or heat; do not store in the bathroom or kitchen. Keep away from children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Gianvi?
Symptoms may include vaginal bleeding, nausea, or vomiting. Call your doctor or local poison control center if you suspect an overdose.
Warnings
Gianvi and other oral contraceptives DO NOT prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS or other STI's.
Smoking tobacco or burning cigarettes increases your risk of cardio-vascular problems, such as stroke or heart attacks, while taking oral contraceptives, and Gianvi may increase that risk further.
Some medications may interfere with Gianvi's efficacy as a contraceptive, so always tell medical professionals that you're taking it. Missing consecutive days of Gianvi will also interfere; use backup birth control and talk to your doctor immediately about potential pregnancy. Also use backup birth control if you're sick with diarrhea or vomiting.
