Klaron Information:

What is Klaron?

Klaron is a topical antibiotic acne medication that contains sulfacetamide. It works by inhibiting a component of folic acid that bacteria need to survive. It may also have anti-inflammatory properties. Topical sufacetamide is also used to treat certain types of dermatitis and other skin infections.

How do I take Klaron?

Klaron is for topical use only. Do not apply it to sensitive areas such as around the eyes, near the nostrils or the lips. Gently clean and dry the affected area(s) before applying Klaron. After the affected area has dried, apply Klaron lotion in a thin layer. This medication is normally applied twice daily, but follow your doctor’s or dermatologist’s instructions for your condition. Wash your hands after each use.

Before taking Klaron, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to sulfa antibiotics or any of the ingredients in Klaron lotion.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are using any other products or medications on the affected area(s).
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially other antibiotics.

What are the possible side effects of taking Klaron?

Possible side effects from using Klaron include red or irritated skin at the site of application, dry skin and yellow or discolored skin. Tell your doctor or dermatologist if any of these side effects are severe. Serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about immediately include allergic reaction, patchy skin color or rash of any kind, joint pain or stiffness, severe swelling of the skin, sore throat, worsening symptoms, blistering, pale skin, and easily bruising or bleeding.

What if I forget to take a dose of Klaron?

If you forget to apply a dose of Klaron, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s already almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Do not apply two consecutive doses to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store Klaron?

Store Klaron lotion at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets. Ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of any unused medication.

What happens if I overdose on Klaron?

There are no reports of Klaron overdose. If your skin is irritated or discolored, or if you think you are using too much Klaron lotion, talk to your doctor. If someone accidentally ingests Klaron, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

This medication is for topical use only. Do not apply Klaron to broken skin and avoid sun exposure when possible. Wear protective clothing or sunscreen. Avoid getting this lotion on clothing or fabrics. It may discolor clothing.
