Glyset Information:

Glyset is a diabetes drug with the active ingredient miglitol. It slows down your body’s digestion of carbohydrates, a type of sugar. Slow carbohydrate digestion allows less sugar to pass into your blood and prevents the onset of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).  When combined with diet and a doctor-recommended exercise plan, it can help control blood sugar in adults who have type 2 diabetes.

Take your dosage when eating one of your main meals of the day. Take it alongside the first bite of the meal. This medication is usually prescribed for consumption three times per day. Follow all instructions provided by your doctor and those written on your prescription label. Ask your doctor before changing your dosage or schedule. Perform all parts of your treatment plan while taking this medication, including diet changes and exercise regimens.

Before taking Glyset, tell your doctor if:

·       You have an inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease

·       You have a chronic intestinal disorder that affects your digestion

·       You have blockage in your intestines

·       You have a stomach disorder that causes excess gas

·       You have diabetic ketoacidosis

·       You have allergies to this or other medications

·       You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications

·       You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

The most common side effects of treatment with Glyset include diarrhea, stomach upset, gas, or mild rash. Call your physician if you begin to experience severe diarrhea, constipation, bloody or tarry stool, diarrhea with blood or mucus, or rectal bleeding.

Take the dose that you missed as soon as you remember to take it. If it is nearly time to take your next scheduled dose, skip the dose that you missed and move to the next scheduled dose, then continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store this medication in a place that remains at room temperature throughout the day. Keep it away from moisture, heat, pets, and children.

In the event of an overdose, you may begin to experience severe side effects associated with Glyset use. Move to an emergency room as quickly as possible or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Do not take this medication if you have bowel diseases or intestinal disorders that hinder digestion. You should also avoid this medicine if you have excess gas.
