Intron A Information:

What is Intron A?

Intron A is a synthetic form of the interferon protein that the body makes naturally. Interferon is associated with cell growth and the immune system, and adding more of this protein to the body can help treat certain cancers (including melanoma, leukemia, and AIDS-related Kaposi’s sarcoma) and viral infections (including chronic hepatitis B and C).

How do I use Intron A?

Your healthcare provider should instruct you on how to inject Intron A into a muscle or under the skin. If you are unsure of how to safely administer this medication yourself, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Always check the vial of medication before each injection to make sure there are no floating particles or discoloration. Avoid shaking the vial or syringe. Dispose of needles or single-use syringes in a special sharps container when you are done (talk to your doctor if you’re unsure where to get this type of container).

Before using Intron A, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications or supplements
  • You have a history of blood cell disorders or blood clots
  • You have diabetes
  • You have any heart problems
  • You have or have had cancer
  • You have HIV or any other condition that compromises your immune system
  • You have high blood pressure
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You have an intestinal disease
  • You have a breathing disorder
  • You have a mental or mood disorder
  • You have pancreatitis
  • You have epilepsy or another seizure disorder
  • You have high blood triglyceride levels
  • You have a history of drug or alcohol abuse
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

What are the possible side effects of using Intron A?

Headache, fatigue, upset stomach, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, dry mouth, and back pain are some of the most commonly reported side effects of Intron A. Some people also experience flu-like symptoms within the first few days of their treatment. These side effects usually go away as your body adjusts to the medicine, and you can reduce your risk of discomfort by injecting the medicine shortly before bedtime. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience an irregular heart rate, unusual menstrual changes, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, increased thirst or urination, difficulty sleeping or walking, vision changes, easy bruising or bleeding, severe nausea and vomiting, stomach pain, dark urine or stools, jaundice, or signs of a new infection. Get emergency medical help if you experienced slurred speech, chest pain, weakness on one side of the body, or seizures.

What if I forget to use a dose of Intron A?

You may receive your injections in a healthcare facility; keep all scheduled appointments if this is case. If you are injecting Intron A at home and you miss a dose, call your doctor to establish a new dosing schedule.

How do I store Intron A?

Store your Intron A vials in the refrigerator, out of reach of children. Your pharmacist may give you additional storage instructions for when your medication has already been mixed; follow all instructions carefully. Do not use any medicine that has become discolored or has particles floating in it. If you need to dispose of this medication, ask your pharmacist how to safely do so.

What happens if I overdose on Intron A?

Overdosing on Intron A may cause abdominal or stomach pain, dark urine, chest pain, or persistent nausea and vomiting. If you or someone in your home is exhibiting overdose symptoms, get emergency medical attention.

Warnings

This drug may make you bruise and bleed more easily, so avoid contact sports and be careful when using sharp objects, such as razors. Intron A may also make your dizzy, so be careful performing any activities that require clear vision and alertness (such as driving) until you know you can do so safely. Limit your alcohol consumption, since alcohol can make certain side effects worse. Do not get any vaccinations without the permission of your doctor, and wash your hands regularly to reduce your risk of getting a new infection.

Brand Names

As a man-made protein, Intron A is only available in brand name form. There are several other brand name drugs containing interferon—including Pegasys, Sylaton, and Pegintron—but these are not necessarily interchangeable. If your doctor has determined that Intron A is the best course of treatment for you but the cost is a concern, remember to get a reusable Intron A coupon from our site.
