What is Jardiance?
Jardiance is a type of drug known as an SGLT2 inhibitor. It is an insulin-independent diabetes medication. It stops glucose from being reabsorbed into the kidneys and increases glucose excretion in urine, which helps lower blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes.
How do I take Jardiance?
Take Jardiance by mouth as your doctor directs you to, typically once a day with or without food. It is best to take this medication in the morning, as close as possible to the same time every day to help you remember.
Before taking Jardiance, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication or you have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, especially insulin or water pills
- You have a history of kidney or liver problems
- You have a history of urinary tract infections
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Jardiance?
Because Jardiance is a medication that lowers blood sugar levels, some people who take it experience symptoms of low blood sugar, such as headache, drowsiness, hunger, weakness, dizziness, sweating, confusion, and shaking. Tell your doctor if you experience any of these side effects, as your dosage may need to be adjusted. Urinary tract infections, dehydration, vaginal yeast infection, and yeast infection of the penis can also be side effects of Jardiance. Let your doctor know if any side effects persist or worsen over time.
What if I forget to take a dose of Jardiance?
Never double the amount of Jardiance you normally take to catch up after a missed dose. You should take a missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this case, just skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule.
How do I store Jardiance?
Jardiance needs to be kept at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees. Do not store it in the bathroom, as the heat and humidity may be too high. As with any prescription medication, keep Jardiance out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Jardiance?
Never take more of Jardiance than has been prescribed, and never share your medication with anyone else. If you or someone in your household does overdose on this drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical attention.
Warnings
The amount of Jardiance you need may change if your body is under more stress than usual (for example, if you have a fever or have recently undergone surgery). Talk to your doctor to see if you need to temporarily adjust your dosage in this type of situation. You should also talk to your doctor about how to recognize the symptoms of high and low blood sugar if you are not already familiar with them.
