Lyrica Information:
What is Lyrica?
Lyrica, generically named pregabalin, is an anticonvulsant used to treat partial seizures, neuropathic pain, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It is often prescribed to treat neuropathic pain from fibromyalgia. This medication is similar to the first-line medication for epileptic seizures called gabapentin but stronger. It works by binding to calcium channels to control the body’s electrical balance and moderate seizures. Because Lyrica reduces calcium currents, it affects the release of some calcium-dependent neurotransmitters from the spinal cord that cause the body to sense pain. This may be why Lyrica is effective in the treatment of fibromyalgia and other types of neuropathic pain. Pregabalin also affects the neurotransmitter GABA, making it more dense and efficient. GABA has a calming effect which is why this medication is approved to treat GAD.
How do I take Lyrica?

Follow instructions given to you by your doctor. Your doctor may increase your dose over time. Lyrica comes in the form of a capsule to be taken orally. Take your medication on a regular schedule and follow a routine so that you will remember to take it on time.

If you experience an allergic reaction, swelling of the hands or feet, unusual bleeding or bruising, changes in vision, negative change in mood or any severe or unusual side effects, tell your doctor at once.
What if I forget to take a dose of Lyrica?
If you miss a dose of Lyrica, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
