Nitrostat Information:
What is Nitrostat?
Nitrostat pills contain nitroglycerin which is a vasodilator drug. It works by relaxing vascular smooth muscle tissue and widening veins and arteries which allows the blood to flow more freely to the heart. This relieves pain from angina which is caused by a lack of blood flow to the heart.
How do I take Nitrostat?
Nitrostat tablets are taken as needed. If you feel an angina attack coming on, place a tablet under your tongue and allow it to dissolve. Do not chew or swallow Nitrostat pills whole. If the pain continues after 5 minutes, you may take another tablet. Do not take more than 3 doses in 15 minutes. If pain persists, seek medical attention. Nitrostat can also be taken before participating in physical activity, or before you do something you know will cause an angina attack. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.
Before taking Nitrostat, tell your doctor if:
- You have recently had a heart attack or stroke
- You have anemia
- You have ever had heart failure
- You have low blood pressure
- You have glaucoma
- You get migraine headaches
- You have liver disease
- You’ve ever sustained a head injury or hemorrhage
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially PDE5 inhibitors or drugs for erectile dysfunction, beta blockers, aspirin, calcium channel blockers, nitrates, and any other heart or blood pressure medications.
- You have dry mouth or you are taking any drugs that make your mouth dry.
What are the possible side effects of taking Nitrostat?
Nitrostat tablets may cause a slight tingling or burning sensation in your mouth. This is normal. Other common side effects include feeling slightly weak or dizzy and a warm or tingly sensation. Serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about at once include: blurred vision, nausea, passing out or feeling faint, vomiting, pale skin, fever, sore throat, unusual heart rate, severe headache and a blistering, peeling rash.
What if I forget to take a dose of Nitrostat?
Nitrostat is taken as needed. Do not exceed 3 tablets in a 15-minute period.
How do I store Nitrostat?
Keep Nitrostat pills with you in case you have an attack. This medication should be kept at a temperature around 68-77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep Nitrostat out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Nitrostat?
Drug overdose on Nitrostat may cause low blood pressure, pounding headache, confusion, fever, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, low heart rate, difficulty breathing, coma and death. If you think you or someone else has overdosed on Nitrostat, call 911.
