Tenormin Information:
What is Tenormin?
Tenormin is a drug used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the workload on the heart and arteries. If high blood pressure continues for a long period of time, it can cause damage to blood vessels in the brain, heart, liver, or kidneys. This damage can result in stroke, heart failure, abnormal liver function, or kidney failure. Tenormin is classified as a beta-blocker. Beta-blockers affect the cardiovascular system by slowing heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and reducing strain on the heart. Tenormin can also be used to treat chest pain, and to treat or prevent a heart attack.
How do I take Tenormin?
Use Tenormin as prescribed by your doctor. Take Tenormin by mouth with or without food at the same time every day with a full glass of water. If you are being treated for high blood pressure, continue using Tenormin even if you feel fine. Do not skip doses or stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor first. Suddenly stopping Tenormin could make your condition worse. It may take one to two weeks before you experience the full benefit of this medication. Contact your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
Before taking Tenormin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to Tenormin, or you have any other allergies
- You are taking other prescriptions or supplements
- You have heart rhythm problems
- You have low blood pressure
- You have breathing problems, such as asthma or COPD
- You have a thyroid disorder
- You have diabetes
- You have blood circulation problems
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have pheochromocytoma
- You have myasthenia gravis
- You are breastfeeding or pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Tenormin?
Side effects of Tenormin can include dizziness, lightheadedness, tiredness, and nausea. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your healthcare professional. Tell your doctor right away if any of these rare but serious side effects occur: slow heartbeat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing, blue fingers/toes, or mental/mood changes. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience anxiety, extreme fatigue, irregular breathing, unusual drowsiness, or slurred speech.
What if I forget to take a dose of Tenormin?
If you miss a dose, take Tenormin as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medication or double the dose.
How do I store Tenormin?
Store Tenormin at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Do not keep Tenormin in the bathroom. If you no longer need this medication or it is expired, properly discard the product. Contact your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more information.
What happens if I overdose on Tenormin?
Symptoms of a Tenormin overdose can include lethargy, wheezing or difficulty breathing, slow heartbeat, swelling of the hands or feet, blurred vision, and fainting. Get emergency help immediately if you suspect that you or a member of your household are experiencing symptoms of an overdose.
Warnings
Because Tenormin can cause dizziness, you should avoid driving, operating hazardous machinery, or any activity that requires alertness until you know how Tenormin will affect you. Drinking alcohol may have additive effects in lowering blood pressure; therefore, alcohol consumption should be limited. Avoid drinking orange or apple juice within four hours of taking Tenormin, as juice can reduce the effectiveness of the medication. If you have diabetes, Tenormin may mask the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Check your blood sugar levels regularly as directed by your doctor. If you need any type of surgery, you may need to temporarily cease using Tenormin. Be sure to inform your surgeon that you are using Tenormin.
