Norco Information:

What is Norco?

Norco medicine is a combination of hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen used for relief of moderate to severe pain. Hydrocodone bitartrate is an opiod analgesic and antitussive, while acetaminophen is a slightly bitter, white odorless powder which is available over the counter and is used to reduce pain and fever. Acetominophen is non-habit forming but does cause other health issues, such as liver damage, when taken over long periods. Hydrocodone may be habit forming and can cause mental or physical dependence.  Mental dependence is not likely to occur when Norco medication is used to relieve pain; however, physical dependence may lead to withdrawal side effects resulting from a sudden stop in dosage, but those potential effects can usually be avoided by gradual reduction over a period of time before treatment is completely stopped.

How do I take Norco?

Norco medicine is only available with a prescription. Use our Norco discount coupon to reduce the price in your pharmacy. The typical adult dosage of the Norco drug is 2 pills of 5mg hydrocodone/325 mg acetaminophen in tablet form taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain. Patients should not exceed 8 tablets per day for Norco 5mg/325mg. The usual dose for Norco 7.5 mg/325 mg and norco 10mg/325 mg is 1 pill every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain, either dosage should not exceed 6 Norco pills per day.

Before taking Norco, tell your doctor if:

  • You have had any unusual or allergic reactions to this or other medicines.
  • You have any allergies to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals.
  • You are taking any prescription, over-the-counter medicine, or herbal products.
  • You have ever had liver or kidney problems, head injuries, hypothyroidism, adrenal gland problems, enlarged prostate, problems urinating due to narrowing of the urethra, or lung disease.
  • You have a history of alcoholism or drug abuse.
  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant.

What are the possible side effects of taking Norco?

Some side effects from taking Norco may include lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, vomiting, or constipation. While these effects will likely subside over time, you should report any of these symptoms to your doctor.

Other, more severe side effects include mental or mood changes, severe stomach or abdominal pain, difficulty urinating, fainting, seizures, slow or shallow breathing, unusual drowsiness or difficulty waking up. If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Norco?

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time.

How do I store Norco?

Norco medicine should be stored in a closed container at room temperature. Do not expose Norco to heat, moisture, or direct light. Do not store Norco in your bathroom medicine cabinet and keep it out of the reach of children. Talk to your pharmacist or medical professional about how to properly dispose of unused or expired medication.

What happens if I overdose on Norco?

Symptoms of hydrocodone overdose include respiratory depression (a decrease in respiratory rate), extreme somnolence progressing to stupor or coma, skeletal muscle flaccidity, cold and clammy skin, and, occasionally, bradycardia and hypotension. In severe overdoses, apnea, circulator collapse, cardiac arrest and death may occur. Symptoms of acetaminophen overdose include nausea, vomiting, diaphoresis, and general malaise.

If overdose of Norco medication is suspected, summon emergency medical assistance immediately.

Warnings

Acetaminophen may cause acute liver failure when taken over long periods of time and may result in the need for liver transplant or even death. Typical cases associated with liver injury involve patients who have exceeded 4,000 mg per day doses and often have a history of taking more than one acetaminophen-containing product.

Elderly patients are more likely to experience confusion and drowsiness, and age-related liver, kidney or heart problems because of the hydrocodone and acetaminophen combination.

Hydrocodone suppresses the cough reflex and, as with all narcotics, care should be taken when administering Norco to postoperative patients and patients with pulmonary disease.
